There's a good reason why boys are often voiced by women in cartoons. Just imagine if they always hired actual boys who then went through puberty. Spike would sound completely different by now if he was voiced by an actual boy. It's not as bad for girls as it is for boys, but it's still noticeable. I actually still find it very jarring how much Harry Potter's voice changed between Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban, even though there was supposed to be only a summer between them.

All things considered, Equestria Girls has the same problems as the main franchise (focusing more on the immediate needs of the current story as opposed to trying to fit it into a larger world), they're just more obvious because they're forced into 90 minutes as opposed to a whole season's worth of episodes.
