Talking about the creature design in 11-5411-54's creatures are actually intentionally designed the wat they are with a couple exceptions.
Creatures labeled with the beginning identifier "AV" are leftovers from a video game that fell through. I made notes from that production cannon early on. Also all AV creatures are actually surviving samples in 11-54 and are unable to respawn via the tubes.
Bioform 13-XX (capybaras) and the flying lobster shaped robots are from a dream I had. This dream also involved an office building overgrown with various bio-luminescent mosses and funguses.
Past these, the remaining creatures in 11-54 have been inspired by 1960's-70's era sci-fi aliens. An example would be something like Fantastic Planet, although I also drew some inspiration from Metroid 2's enemies among other things.
11-54 isn't really a scary quest. Honestly I gave up on maintaining any sense of horror after Spearmint joined the party and killed any sense of isolation. I'm not angry about it though. I still like 11-54 despite it's often schizophrenic tone. It's really been fun to run.
