It was a scapegoat. Consider the entire shitstorm of what happened at the end of Season 3. Then you see a crappy promo image that is just shitty clip art of the characters. Then you know the waifu stealing Flash Sentry. It was just a horrible time, and so people just blamed EqG for what happened with MMC thanks to the timing.
Notice how the second and third EQG movies are regarded as not as bad as the first, despite in all honestly they're all about the same, and the 3rd one is definitely the worst, by Hasbro's standards. (Didn't preform as great, so several dolls that were meant to be released were cancelled, like the rollar skating dolls). And in all honesty, the first EQG isn't even the worst thing in the series, there have been much worse episodes.

1) Setting; it takes what could be an interesting concept, an alternate version of Equestria, and sets it in High School, which many see as Overdone, Contrived and, a pointed out before, trying to cash in on other franchises with the same basic idea (X, but in high school).
2) Characterization: Because it's an alternate version of Equestria, you have to re-introduce characters we already know on top of characters that are new, in the span of 90 minutes, plus keeping the plot moving. it can be done well, but a lot of times it can be like a fat woman trying to put on a mini-skirt.
3) Money; It's probably a lot cheaper for Hasbro to order a 90-minute movie and send it straight to DVD than to order a 26-episode season, or at the very least, Returns happen faster.

The characters are just carbon copies from the show they spun off from, the plot is rather thin, the world is a bland normal day setting giving it no feeling other than 'slight' magic shit going on that is just a pour-off from Equestria making it uninteresting due to not being able to really expand it without it being the same for what it spun off from. Twilight in the EQG world is an utter disaster of a character in terms of a show doing a spinoff. I know, I get that they couldn't have carbon copies of characters, but I feel the attitude that the school she came from had a pretty close attitude to her original self at the beginning of the show. Why they didn't have any of the season 1 Twilight front and center and instead had this forced sympathetic character that was pretty much a copy of Fluttershy in terms of attitude is beyond me. As for the second movie, it again had a tie-in with Equestria proving this universe to be a rather boring place without the ponies from Equestria fucking things up. While it was nice to see them struggle with their rolls in the group, it got a bit more intense than it probably should have and was kind of fan-servicy with side characters and background characters taking center stage a little too much. It was plot-wise and character-wise the best of the three and wasn't completely terrible, but was still set in a place rather unoriginal and uninspiring. It probably doesn't help that I'm not a big fan of musical-esque things like the second movie was and think it depended entirely too much to fill time with music and songs that didn't do too much to push forward the plot. As an overall, the movies are rather forgettable and rely too much on their predecessor to build their world making it feel like there is no way to grow other than to force something through Equestria. Will Legend of the Evergreen change that? Not sure, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

I really don't know. For direct to TV and DVD children's movies, they're not all that bad (there have been worse). My complaints are rushed pacing, pastel people (I know it's for association, it's just unsettling), and a copious amount of deus ex machina moments and other cliches (protagonist must do x on the night of the full moon). As for being an offshoot, Hasbro cares more about their bottom line and knows it will sell. As for being simplistic, it's aimed at six- to ten-year-olds, not at six- to ten-year-olds and their parents/older siblings like a Pixar or Dreamworks movie is.

People are upset with it because it's not what they want for whatever reason, but it's not supposed to be what they want, it's meant to be something to compete with Monster High and similar brands.
