I think much of what I've said could be applied to Sunset Shimmer as well. The only difference being is that we rarely have to see her. In EQG: FG, she merely filled in for Twilight as a sort of semi-protagonist when we needed things explaining and finally drilling the point about "sharing friendship". But ultimately there wasn't much of a character there either.
To a lesser extent Twilight had these problems as well, but at least she had the "awkward loner in need of friendship advice" thing going on. As the main protagonist, she was a good introduction to the other, more interesting characters, but Twilight herself wasn't necessarily boring.

If you're going to redeem a character, at least make it one that visibly has problems. What exactly does Starlight Glimmer need to do by "putting Twilight's lessons to the test?" Can't we do this with much more interesting characters? Haven't we covered this ground already?
To both of you, I honestly loved Starlight Glimmer as the marxist in Season 5, in fact, she was may favourite villain in the show so far. But rather than retain a useful asset, they've chopped her nuts off and have turned her into an awkward obstacle in the way of more interesting characters. The "new" Starlight is just a shell, and a crappy one at that. Sorry.
