Way I have written the story so far is that the people are grim, but the lands around it are rather bright. Essentially there is oppertunity for wonderous sights and things to be seen, but the country we live in, the people here are kinda dicks, that being said recent overtures of friendship in the capital have begun to take root. But for now our chances of seeing that enlightened rule are minor at best.
tldr: The government is kinda shit and mean, the prince is nice to use, the princess is wanting glory and war mongering. The area can be dark in places but most of it is exploring around and finding new things tier.

That would work more for a central capital idea but from what we can see in the show is that the griffins prefer mountains and stonework with large airy structures implying either really thick furs or the fires run hot in the mountain tops

Far left X or far right X would be most interesting, especially if right's mountains can be climbed or the pony village has a tunnel or path through it. That way we can be encouraged to try diplomacy with them or eventually build up town relations.

Of all the races listed there, it's the only one with literally no real info beyond 'they pulled Luna's cart'. No matter wehat you try, the "Batpony" established noncanon wise by a lot of people will leak in. Fangs, blood/mango shit, nocturnal, echolocation, etc.
So what I've come up with in regards to lore is this:
Before it became the piece of trash it was, Ravenscar was actually a fairly known town among the locals. Now, the town population is quite small, due to it being situated in a magical yet perilous forest known as Wyrdward Wood.
However, there is a legend spoken among the people about a treasure of great power hidden somewhere in the enchanted forest, something that would grant its possessor the power to become a mighty king. Clues to its existence and location were found in the secret writings of King Gerrant V, the wealthiest king of Gryphonia, by a scribe.
Pilgrims and explorers alike used to frequent the town as a base camp before setting out into the Wyrdward Woods in search of the fabled treasure. Many adventurers find nothing but aches, scars, and another tale for the local bar to stock up on. Some don't make it to town and are claimed by the strange forces that govern the forest.
One day, an unknown adventurer set events in motion for the eventual abandonment and desolation of the town. Nobody knows whether they uncovered a magical artifact that was beyond their ability to control, or ventured into the bowels of the Wyrdward Woods and made an ill-advised pact with one of its spirits, or unknowingly freed an evil unicorn mage, imprisoned in one of the many surrounding ruins for his crimes against the nation. In any case, one day, the town was besieged by all sets of supernatural entities that forced the townsfolk to evacuate Ravenscar immediately. Spirits, ghosts, and all sorts of monsters pretty much wrecked the town, and all manner of the king beating the onslaught of enemies back proved futile.
But then the creatures of the forest mysteriously just moved on and went back to their natural habitat. Now all that's left is an abandoned ghost town in the middle of a forest.

I think it makes the territory varied enough to still be interesting but also not completely close off prompts to any writers. The river and the station being within reasonable traveling distance, if well supplied, opens up a lot of exploration avenues. Staying confined in our town area can also be possible depending on weather conditions or other things keeping us trapped.

Neat, so what's some other things that could be discussed? I really like the idea of their being some weird magic stuff in the forests that had been the cause and doom of the city.
