Growing up in Manehattan must certainly be a different experience from the small town life of Ponyville. With the sheer size, there's probably more than one school class that meets, and with somewhat different demographics, too. Afterwards would be park time or some such, too, with all the streets and buildings limiting good hangout spots. Babs Seed would have some insight, surely, though she couldn't account for it all.

I went and had a look at the O. Henry story this was (very) loosely based on ("The Gift of the Magi"), and thought that the writers mostly de-fanged it. Maud didn't really have to sacrifice anything, and Pinkie's loss of her party cannon was temporary.
I wish they'd either played it completely straight, or done a more clever aversion of the original piece's bittersweet ending.

I was a little miffed because I really wanted to love the episode; Rarity teaching a lesson about being too generous and how people don't want you to hurt yourself just to please them was top tier stuff strait out of season 2.
But all the verbal gags that just fell flat really sucked a lot of momentum out of the episode and it came off just OK when it could of been amazing, especially with the amount of feels to be had.
Again not bad but could of been soooo much better if the writer was funnier or if the jokes had been cut. They could of filled the time with Rarity finding a gift for Maud she would actually like, like she could of gone to a table shop and bough a slab of rare and interesting marble that was both visually pleasing and geologically interesting,

That would have been pretty good. Instead Rarity was more of an exposition character and Maud taught the lesson.
I kind of liked how decided Maud was the moment she found out Pinkie traded the party canon. Instead of thinking about it or feeling bad she just immediately went to resolve the conflict.
I'm really not sure what the lesson was though, other than what they said about how any gift is fine as long as it's from the heart.

Pretty much.
The episodes aren't disasters in execution, they're just shoddily trying to copy something that simply can't be fitted into a 21 minute purple horse show for children and the result is that they suck no matter how much effort the story boarders and animators put into it.
The notion it could even work is wrong to begin with... the characters have no real non-contrieved (to be fair at least it wasn't absolutely off the hook in this case, less so in Hooffields') reason to get into the situation the characters of the respective works (or events) found themselves in.
Trying to hamfist them into tem is like writing a shitty crossover fanfic, replacing ponies fighting over tiberium with existential crisis or other bullshit.That's why I never liked Simpsons, they never had characters, just blaks that are fitted into the role of Rome/Juliet/poets/merchants/avergae Joes/... depending on what the current writer needed to put on the screen.
