Planes are hard to maintain. You need a licensed mechanic, everything must be exactingly logged, and done to FAA directives. In addition, planes are required to have a higher level of mean reliability than most other vehicles, considering if they have a structure or engine failure, many people could easily die.
I'm the pilot anon, as well, and Avgas is kind of expensive. That being said, you could buy a C-172N for $17,000 or so, with IFR equipment installed.

You say its hard to hit another plane but my second flight an F4U being flown by an old dude passed within 50 feet of my plane and he never even saw us. "See and avoid" is good, but collisions do happen, especially near airports.
