A few years ago some popular fan artist on dA at the time made an adoptable auction that sold for more than $2,000 in 28 hours.
The guy who bought her apparently named her "Bit Drizzle" because of how much he paid for her, and apparently made her his ponysona's waifu or some shit. It was pretty cringeworthy, especially because he gave her a gaymur grrl cutiemark.
Pic is the image that was auctioned. Normally adopts only sell for $150~$300 at the most, so that kind of money shocked a lot of people. And of course because dA tartlets are how they are, they went full whiteknight on the price he paid for it.
A Google reverse image search will show you that RPers on other websites totally ignored her history and used her as an OC for roleplays anyway.

There's a severe lack of crystal pony OCs in general. The ones that I know about are pretty good, I guess because plebs don't think about crystal ponies when they decide to make a new OC.

To be fair, you're looking at somewhere in the region of $20-30 for a nice quality reference sheet (assuming the artist is any good). Buying an OC is basically just a package deal at that point. I could imagine a price of around $30-50 for a particularly good looking OC by a super good artist, especially if you planned on using it a lot.

On the other hand, that's $2000 that are now in the hands of a pretty darn skilled artist. "A fool and their money are soon parted" so you'd probably want that money going to someone who could put it to more productive use.
