I love those kinds of episodes, /mlp/ isn't one person, I think you are just projecting.

At least with this concept we could have had an excuse for the Explore Equestria theme this season.

We have no season wide arc again, which sucks.
>>
>>26910304
People loved Twilight's Kingdom dude.
>>
>>26910217
If I can speculate a second, I think part of it is that the action sequences inevitably end of being meaningless in plot terms.

I've long wanted some more action/adventure elements in FiM, but what we get - brief DBZ laser fights, 30-second glimpses of alternate realities that will never be brought up again, 'fights' that very often end up being barely-animated clip shows - consistently seem to add nothing but sucking up valuable episode time. They feel tacked on to the episode, not a flowing part of it.

Compare the Daring Do sequences in Read It and Weep. They fit much better in the episode, and serve to bring up an injury that highlights her nature as a literal self-insert character for RD. That is more in the way of character development from an action sequence than we ever saw come out of any of the season finale 'fights'.
>>
>>26910448
Adding to this a second: If they would be willing to write action sequences that could lead to character development - facing the facts of what they did with fighting, showing any kind of tactics or reflections of their personalities in that - I'd cheer it all the way.

But as it is? I can't really look forward to the finale 'fights' when they're inevitably irrelevant a few minutes later.

Hey man, I like fantasy and I like action, but in MLP it's better in focusing on the fantasy lore aspect than the action itself.
>>
>>26910217
I loved this because it had a really wacky sense of fantasy and action like Swarm of the Century or Power Ponies.
>>
>>26910217
Fuck off Anon, lots of us were excited for some fun times on the episode that were replaced with a baby's mess.
>>
>>26910448
The animatic seemed to have a lot of action packed gags mixed with surreal humor, something I wished the show had a lot more of.
>>
>>26910217

I liked it.
>>
>>26910217
Because the fun episodes are just Hasbro trying to sell toys.

>>

The powerups seemed to provide a set of unique abilities rather than a super magical laser blast.

Or even having them play out the role of other superheroes, since the abilities seem to be more tied to their talents/desires.
>>
>>26910217
Golly, Anon, the S5 finale irked me bad. Especially with Rainbow's metal wing, I was wondering why they had 2012 fanfic authors on the story. It was a mess, there was pointless nonsense everywhere, it just wasn't something that young children could connect with (regarding an alternate reality) and that's where MLP gets its charm. Don't even get me started on Tirek.
>>
>>26911595
But that's where the beauty of the early animatic was, the Hero Items had a very silly element to them thus allowing a gag-filled action episode to occur.

I grew up watching a slew of shows that had heavier things than fantasy prosthetics due to war injuries. Kids arsn't dumb. Kids shouldn't be protected from perceived threats. Shows can cater to children without sacrificing their intellect and integrity (unlike this season's two-parter).
>>
>>26910217
I love action episodes, but normally they suck balls because of the contortions and asspulls the writers end up doing to make it "work" with the least ammount of effort possible.
>>
>>26910217
Around the tail end of season 3 people started getting hyper sensitive and calling everything that isn't strict slice of life 'edgy.'

It isn't as if the days of fun are over, mind you. But the menu has definitely changed.
>>
ITT: The hivemind continues to shit on the same episodes, arguing that they "have standards" and yet they watch a children's cartoon and get paranoid about the jewish higher ups of the company who makes it.

A quick reminder that there was nothing inherently DBZ-ish about the Tirek battle, and the people trying to use it as the core of their complaints are just crybabies who have no other way to legitimize their dislike for the scene.

They gave us a short and to-the-point fight scene two years ago that follows the standard conventions of fantasy battles in general, and neo-/mlp/ is kicking and screaming like it's the end of the world. You people are fucking pathetic.

I liked it. It had good camera play and film theory built up in it. Is that a crime?

contrarianism

/mlp/ will bash S1 because "nostalgiafags" like it, and then turn around and bash the more action-packed episodes because "the bronies" like them

I loved this scene.

You hit the nail on the head talking about how the fight scenes should ideally contribute to character development, but I wouldn't dismiss the current fight scenes outright either.

Take the fight in the S5 finale for instance: I'd say this fight worked better than the fight against Tirek because it was built up over the course of the entire season, with Glimmer being introduced in the premier and appearing in the background during numerous episodes. This led to the fight being hyped up like a fight in a shonen anime, since you knew what Glimmer's capabilities were and that a re-match between her and Twilight was inevitable.

The fight resulted in no character development, but it kept the audience engaged which is also good.
>>
>>26910217
I think the gags were fun because they were so outthere.
>>
>>26910421
>we have no season wide arc
It's implied at the end of the premier that the season's going to be about Twilight giving Starlight friendship lessons.
>>
>>26915121
Doesn't explain the Explore Equestria setup
>>
>>26915150
Well, Twilight needs to pick locations for these lessons to take place in.
>>
>>26915172
I don't think that is how it is gonna work at all.
It is just that episodes will just take place in random locations for contrived reasons.
>>
>>26915172
Why?
>>
>>26910217

Been here since S1 to S2 hiatus
I always hated action on FiM
>>
>>26911440

I think you should go watch mas steel
This show is about cute ponies doing cute things
It was born like and should die like that
>but muh progression
I dont think losing FiM's life force is a good idea
>>
>>26910217
I liked action episodes and I like gag based episodes like Too Many Pinkie Pies and Bats!.

I am rather upset Season 5 was far more subdued in its wackiness.
>>
>>26916029
Fucking this.
If there is anything I miss more from the series it is the shame of its lunacy. It is like after McCarthy left she took the fun away with her.

Season 5 and Friendship Games are radically subdued compared to S3-S4 and that makes them boring to me. As silly as the idea was I did appreciate the idea of the Hero Items providing a tool for writing more surreal storylines that have been seriously lacking.
>>
>>26916029
The writers would just rehash the storylines from other cartoons and add nothing creative to the mix.
>>
>>26910498
>we have standards here
>board is such literal shit the mods intervened

Yeah nah. Speak for yourself. I loved Twilight's Kingdom and, for anyone who actually was here at the time, the majority opinion (not that it matters) was that it was a good finale.

Why do people have problems with this? It's fucking awesome. This kind of episode was what got people hooked into the show in the first place i.e. Friendship is Magic Part 1 and 2.
