Ultimately, this thing is art. And for someone who'll rim the asshole of "criticism" so hard, you seem to be extremely dead set in the belief that there is some kind of objective quality that these people are ignoring.
Here's a criticism: interpretations of art are completely subjective, you trying to delegitimize certain points of view because you think they don't have merit, while also expounding on the virtues of criticism, is hypocritical nonsense.
There is no such thing as "good", "real", or "actual" criticism. There are different kinds of criticism, but one is not objectively more important than others. That is, unless you're a person so insecure about your own beliefs that you have to put on the veil of authority to feel comfortable disagreeing with other people.

Time. One of the reasons why this show got so big was how accessible it was, but with time comes more episodes, more chapter books, more comics, more obligatory fan content, etc..
At the height of this fandom, the amount of official material consisted of 52 episodes and that's it. Now there are 119 episodes, 3 EqG movies, 14 chapter books and 83 comic issues, along with stuff like Journal of the Two Sisters.
The barrier of entry is a lot higher than it used to be, so not as many people are hopping on.
