Fact is, even with this book, it doesn't really give us a whole lot on their backstory prior to being Princesses.

All it really tells us is Celestia and Luna were part of an alicorn tribe, and that Starswirl approached them and asked them to become princesses because they represented all three pony tribes. Not sure if it implies that both of them left their tribe and were in Equestria when Starswirl met them or not. It is very vague about where they were all that time before meeting him.

For all we know both of them were the last born alicorns of their tribe before they left so they wouldn't know anything about alicorn births. And alicorns have a huge lifespan so maybe having kids wasn't a huge priority. Of course this is speculation at this point.
