Season 6 Premier brings the show full-circle, I think there is little reason to worry;
-Twilight has become the mentor with a student now. New, more mature friendship lessons like the early seasons, and more refined writing to deliver them
-Half of this premier was all about Starlight developing as a character and learning how to be non-autistic again. "Reuniting with old friends" is a very humble but very meaningful key-note for a premier, much like Season 1

Well, I had had another idea.
Spike finds a tiny baby dragon on the borders of the Everfree forest, which is actually a changeling nymph who changed its form to mimic Spike's (spike mistook the green flame of its transformation as dragonfire).
Spike tries raising the baby dragon, even as it grows at an advanced rate. Everyone's surprised by it, but given nobody really knows about baby dragons, they don't really know if it's unusual. Meanwhile, Spike is getting run ragged trying to care for the baby.
When the baby's at Spike's size, Spike is almost completely exhausted; because the baby's been feeding off his parental love.
And then Chrysalis turns up. It's common practice for baby Changelings to be, well, planted as changelings. Left near villages to be adopted and then feed on their adopted parent's loves. It's just Spike's youth which is causing him to be so exhausted from it.
While the ponies are split between fending off Chrysalis, or trying to drive off the nymph, Spike eventually drags himself out of bed to hand the nymph over. He still cares for her, even as a changeling, and wants her to have a good life, like he's had with the ponies.
While Chrysalis scoffs, the nymph gives Spike gives Spike a hug, restoring part of his strength, as the nymph returns his affections, calls him dad, and flies off to rejoin the Changelings.
