Why not? Big Mac is happier as a woman, more open, actually talks. I know a lot of MtF people in this situation and transitioning helped them overcoming depression.
They now have to fight against
- Family (acceptance, tolerance)
- Friends (who often turns out being toxic)
- Society (simple things like healthcare, or using public bathrooms may become problematic, religion and other might also be.)
- Laws (most countries won't recognize trans people or even allow them to be legal)
And many things that makes things hard for anyone to be what they want to be...
Back to the topic, I think it's important on a children's cartoon to have and depict LGBT characters. They're very shy with Lyra and Bonbon, and others like Steven Magnet. But I know and hope things will change and will consider being tolerant about it.

As an artist you have a lot to read and learn then, you will also be required to follow a more progressive and avant-garde thinking.
In France, Belgium and a few more EU states, it's definitively not a problem. Children's books depicts all kind of LGBTQIA topics. Because it's important to educate, and finally teach the upcoming generation to not deal with gender binary which are NOT normal concepts and will in the future cause more problems with children when they reach teenage and might BE confused. This is how we actively fight bigotry and anti-LGBT hate. Not with princesses and unicorns but with characters who develop themselves.

Strangely enough one of the best examples i can recall of trans representation was in china Illinois.
