To be fair, the rarity is also garbage, not because she's tempted or whatever, but because her issue is that she has no confidence? Rarity has an ego the size of Canterlot castle. The problem with this arc wasn't Rarity, it was the fact that it ruin Luna's story.
"I'm only bad because I have become possessed by the force of evil against my will" is shit tier fiction.

I don't get this. She was still guilty of feeling envy toward her sister, hence why it was able to slowly influence her.
Besides that, making it entirely her fault for going full coup for not getting the same attention paints her even edgier than DPDOMS did with her self-inflicted "muh guilt" nightmares.
Ultimately, it's a fantasy-lite universe and the involvement of a fantasy being is much more interesting than if it was just "Queen Angst is upset nopony understands her".
