Right, honest answer. Is this show actually any fucking good. I watched the first 2 episodes and it was okay, standard kiddie fare and wasn't too obnoxious. I watched recommended episodes with "adult pop cultute" references and fair enough that was pretty cool but the actual episodes still seem like they're just for children or adults who cling to easy to digest messages. Someone explain to me why this is so popular?

You've completely missed the point. Watching MLP for pop culture references is like watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for musical numbers. Yes, there are some, but they're mostly in one episode and the show is about something completely different.

We're not watching this series because we think it's trendy or funny, we're watching it because we care about what happens in it. If you don't care about anything that's not a reference, you won't find much here to enjoy.
>>
>>26805349

if you're watching episodes, skip the first season and go back to it later. was kinda shit. think of it like skipping episodes 1-3 of starwars, you should watch them at some point but... not as your first exposure.

90% of the reason people like it is that it's cute as fuck and isn't the usual cynical dark tryhard bs most 'adult' cartoons are. nor does it shove the fucking moral down your throat and beat you over the head with it like most 'kid' cartoons do. there are lots of little easter eggs and references, sure, but catching them is only a small part of the attraction. MLP is 'innocent', although I hesitate to use that term so close to /b/... basically, it's just genuinely fun; the characters are memorable and develop over time, the stories are usually happy and do a good job of playing the characters off each other or off plot points, the music is usually first rate, and the writers pay attention to the fandom. for every twilicorn, there's a twilicane; it's not above making fun of itself.

it's not a cartoon you should watch expecting to learn the meaning of life, rather it's one you can watch after a hard days work to relax and unwind. because it's cute, bright, and fun.

...

the other 10% is the memes, references, animation, inspiration, purdy colors, 'plots', luna, derpy, etc.

Just about all the main characters except Twilight can come off as one-dimensional at first. Over time, though, it'll become clear that they're anything but.

Pinkie has a constant need to be liked by others, and doesn't know how to deal with people who don't enjoy her company.
Applejack will over-commit to any task that could help her family.
Rarity can get caught up in her own ambitions and ignore the wishes of other people.
Rainbow Dash tries to appear more confident than she really is.
Fluttershy is too worried about the feelings of others to say anything, but when she does decide to speak her mind, she often takes it too far.

You have to give this show time. It doesn't put all its cards on the table at once.

Isn't it amazingly precious that they get angry when you ask them why they are into a children's cartoon?

>>
>>26804916
Fuck off. If you want to get into it, fucking watch the show.
>>
>>26804916
If you require the topics covered to be adult, you won't be terribly interested by the episodes that don't contain memes or references. But if you enjoy character development and world building, then watch the damn episodes in order, or you'll fail to see the appeal. Also, remember that some of the appeal also lies in the beautiful escape from this shitty reality offered by cute ponies. Frankly, those two psychologists are probably right, our love of the show is a reaction against our cynical post 9/11 world. We wish the world were kinder, more filled with love and peace and understanding and friendship. And for 20 minutes at a time, the ponies allow us to escape to a place where it is.
>>
>>26806420
You probably shouldn't compare yourself to the rest of 4chan considering the rest of 4chan wants nothing to do with you bronies

Considering the "rest of 4chan" is mainly composed of immigrants from Facebook and Reddit who only came here after 4chan got popular, I really don't care what they want. I was here before they were, and I'll still be here after they leave, posting pastel horses to trigger their crybaby asses.

>>26806567
We know it isn't normal. I derive a sense of satisfaction at knowing that I don't have to do a single thing and people will still get butthurt by the mere existance of people who like something they don't like.

which really is about the caliber of your interest

I suspect it is easier on your self esteem to declare yourself outside normal social interaction by virtue of your weird obsession.

You obviously haven't been here long.

Threads about not getting the appeal have been made over and over and over in the past. They ended up being a bannable offense.
It's not irritation from guilt, it's irritation from seeing the same shit again and again.

Even delicious cake becomes horrible when you get it a million times in a row.
>>
>>26806608
No shit. If someone asked you why you liked a specific movie every day, you would give slightly different answers each time since the first few answers didn't get the person to stop asking you.

It's probably because many of you just pretend to like the show to belong to something for a change.

Oh the irony!

Moot hated furries, and you are furries. Pretty easy to explain.

That's another thing. If being a brony was a genuine interest and not just an obsession borne out of desperate loneliness, you wouldn't have to flaunt it so publicly.

That's another reason people keep asking you "what's the appeal?"

We're basically all closet furfags and this is a containment board. Deal with it.

It's true. People who are secure don't need to constantly flaunt something like you bronies do

I didn't even post it. I just found your spittle-flecked overreaction to such a simple question to be very revealing

Kind of like how you're constantly flaunting your hatred of the show ITT? Funny how at the moment you're demonstrably a hypocrite, while you've provided zero evidence that we even do any of the things you accuse us of.

Not the show. Nothing wrong with the show.

We aren't obsessed, you obtuse fuckwad. It just looks that way because they handed us our own board. Like 80% of the threads are pointless filler because we have no clue what the fuck else to do. If you easily triggered faggots hadn't speeded out back in '11, the there'd be an MLP general on /co/, maybe an occasional waifu claim thread on /b/, and that would basically be it.

Ever since I joined up with this fandom back in 2011, there have been complete strangers telling me how wrong I am for watching a cartoon, discussing it, and appreciating content based on it. They say that being part of a group built around sharing those interests makes me prejudiced, socially maladjusted, mentally ill, degenerate, annoying, immature, or just plain stupid. They have a grudge I can't even begin to talk them out of. They seem intent on getting me to apologize and see the error of my ways, but there's one problem with that.
I have no idea what I did.
I don't know these people. I never did anything bad to them. I just like to watch a cartoon about ponies and talk to others about it. Those who dislike the cartoon don't have to get involved, they can spend time on their own interests. Why do they go out of their way to be around us? Why do they come back to accuse us time and time again? Why does our enthusiasm bother them at all?

Why do you keep doing this?

How did complete strangers find out that you obsessed over it?

Not me in particular. They say it of anyone who's a part of this fandom. I still don't know why.

>>
>>26807762
I get caught up in that kind of mindset every once and a while and have to just sigh in disappointment at the thought. Some people just can't fathom that anyone relatively normal could enjoy a show around ponies and stay civil about it instead of dumping it on others obnoxiously.
>>
>>26806916
You have to realize, that's not us. It's trolls from other boards or other sites.
Moot himself said something like 90% of the pony shitposters don't post on /mlp/.
>>
>this entire fucking thread
We really must be extremely bored to respond to some shitty "I don't get the appeal thread" and then actually argue with some anti-brony retard.

Nice to know that even after all these years there's nothing that triggers 4chan more than pastel horses. I'm pretty sure they were getting bored of shitting on furries and simply needed a new scapegoat.

Just don't you faggots ever forget that your butthurt is the sole reason why the brony fandom even exists. If you hadn't started throwing a fit about ponies back in early 2011, this thing wouldn't have exploded like it did. But when the mods started banning all anons who posted ponies because of your ceaseless whining, these anons eventually scattered to all corners of the Internet, drawing the attention of autistic neckbeards from Reddit and other sites who saw this fandom as a great opportunity for "belonging to something" and be part of a "loving fandom" where they can "love and tolerate". Then those faggots started shoving MLP down people's throats, which made people hate bronies even more. It's a vicious cycle.

It's certainly hard to imagine an alternate universe where this fandom would be contained solely to a general on /co/ and nothing more. You know, /co/ has a fucking Monster High general, but I've never seen anyone throwing a fit about it. It could have been just another weird general on /co/ that people would just ignore if they didn't like it, but thanks to the immense butthurt of a few 4chan anons, you have created the most autistic fandom to have ever come out of the Internet. I sure hope you're proud of yourselves. The brony fandom is 4chan's very own Frankenstein's monster and there's no way of denying that.
