Here's where your attempt fails: ponies aren't animals in the same ways humans aren't animals. Ponies of MLP behave vastly different from real world ponies, whereas most depictions of anthropomorphic animals show them to be little more than animals capable of speech. Equestria was also shown to be an alternate version of a world where there are humans, albeit a cartooized variant. Essentially ponies are to us more akin to extra-dimensional creatures, or rather, extra-terrestrials.
So in conclusion, ponyfuckers are closer to xenophiles than to furries.

I understand where you're coming from with this, but I think you went a step further than me.
OP was asking if there was any difference between furfags and ponyfags, and I explained that, despite both concepts being part of the same group, it is all down to a matter of perspective. Your explaintion seems to have missed the point of OP's question, and instead went into depth on the pony fandom only, without taking consideration of the other fandoms as well.
Not only that, but to say that ponies are not animals in the same way that human are not animals is a complete fallacy. Humans are vastly different from those in the animal kingdom only because of our intelligence, and how we use it to shape the world. But, take away our technology, and thousands of years worth of scientific, political, and social progression, and what have you got? Bipedal simian mammals that migrate from area to area with the passing of the seaons, hunting wild game and gathering fruit in the process, like so many others in the animal kingdom, then and now.
As for ponies, you definitely missed the obvious point about the characters. When the original creator of the MLP came up with the idea, she based it upon every little girl's dream of having their very own pony in their own backyard, but took it one step them further by giving them human-like qualities that made them more lovable and cherishable than their real world counterparts. If she created her characters with hands that could walk on two legs, like so many other characters at the time, then these little girls would not have formed such attachments to her creations. You ask any woman over 30 about mlp, and they'll all say how much they loved the original show, and the memories they have of watching it when they were little.
