Referencing is OK. If it wasn't, then any game with easter eggs to other games would all be CnD'ed so fast your head would explode. No Skyrim, No Borderlands because each have minecraft references. Heck was that creeper licensed? Some companies would pay for linceing but since most easter eggs are short references, it isn't much a big deal. But also you are speaking of known AAA game companies vs a toy company and well, fans.
