ITT: rapidly writing a new op while the old thread is on page 10, and wanting to write a collab with all your circlejerking buddies, until you realize that everyone who isn't you is a goddamned autistic fucktard.

Tired of the same old 'Human goes to Equestria to fuck his herd of underage waifus' formula? Burnt out after reading that Fallout crossover? Well, we've compiled the best of the worst in order to bring you our absolute average!

Introducing, the FiM-Fiction Starter Kit (list of winners):

did anything happen in the old thread that wasnt related to shared fucktardery? because I couldnt think of anything.

and the other thread is on page 10. wanted to post the link to the new thread before that one died so I was in something of a rush

A couple of things, but they were buried under the collab discussion.

Also, this:

We kinda have to do a reestructuration of the whole OP.

Also, you didn't change the prompt.
>>
>>26410053
we can probably axe the prompts. the tumblr is dead, and no one bothers with them anyway

the starter kit and nominees can probably be combined under a single heading

I'm not pulling my pastebin or VGs shit

your orwell shit can likely be stuck in with the fanfiction guide since no one is likely to read either one
>>
>>26409864
We should just have a pastebin/GDoc for writing recourses, yeah.

Here's what I got so far for the outline.

It's fully editable so you can argue in the document or add/delete stuff if you want to.

And here's the backup that only has comments enabled in case someone fucks it up.

I stopped both to get feedback and because I'm a little worried about it. For one, I got 15 chapters plotted out and the damn thing hasn't even hit Manehattan yet. It probably will have to get condensed down and some of the subplots axed or abridged, or we'll have to scale back the size or direction of the storm.

Secondly, the tone was really giving me a warfic kind of vibe. Everyone rushing to do something to save Equestria, Pinkie being nearly useless, Spike getting shipped off (literally). And I'm not sure if that kind of tone--or plot structure for that matter--is even the direction we want to go in.

its tagged tragedy and has a sequel. which is also tagged tragedy

the 1000 word chapters almost made it tolerable, but I dropped it in chapter 4 out of boredom. its just twilight going nuts from different characters perspectives before she kills them and that got old in a hurry

Well, reading through the list, I think that there are several chapters that could be effectively done in less that 2k words, while others should definitely be longer.

I think if we consider that, and find a way to mix a couple of ideas together, we can keep it long, but alos at a constant pace that feels nice to read.
>>
>>26413875

And it would probably be for the best if we tried to keep a somewhat consistent wordcount between chapters.

Here's an idea I had, though itwould probably bloat the chapter count a bit. Nevertheless, I thought I'd share it.

It could be nice that, just as there are some chapters from the POV of the Oranges, we could have short, stand-alone chapters about OCs (or background ponies if they fit) interspersed with the actual story as to get different insights into this whole mess.

- A group of guards do their best to help the inhabitants of Manehattan evacuate (or whichever city is being evacuated at the moment)

- A reporter in the site of the storm, trying to cover the disaster, but having to find shelter once (s)he notices the severity of it.

- A small medical team being sent to a small town that was hit the worst, and tending to the hurt ponies.

- A small foal got lost and tries to find her/his family in a refugee camp after the storm hit, and we get glimpses of how everyone else is coping.

Those are only a couple of ideas I had, what do you guys think?
>>
>>26411822
>The prologue guards have to stay in
Aaaaaawwww I had hoped to have them helping with the evacuation while bickering.
>>
>>26415147
I don't think it would be feasible or cost effective to send a ship to retrieve a couple of guards when all efforts must be focused on evacuating the cities that will be hit by the storm.

Anyone else here think using "anypony" in a grimdark fic is a bad idea, even in character dialogue? Sure, it's how the canon characters act, but grimdark is a whole different tone and even canon characters slip away from it now and then (because it's an annoying and banal thing to have to pay attention to, I wager).

Ah, I was referring to the sequel. The original does have a grimdark ending.

The seuqel ends with a bunch of protesting citizens somehow getting the Elements to work, depowering Twilight, and forcing her to live out the rest of her life wracked with horrible guilt and memories while her dead friends beg her to forgive herself.

>>26415132
I'm up for it. It's just a matter of tying it in with the rest of the story.

>>26415147
The idea I had was that the Harmony/First Fleet would get rekt by the storm and have to run aground/stop at the island to recover.

It's just a preliminary outline and we can always change plot points. That's why we should write out the outline first, so we know what's going to happen.

>>26417716

Has anyone else noticed that FiMfiction has an unusually large hardon for airships considering the fact that they aren't really even mentioned in the source material. They aren't in every fic, certainly, but they're present in plenty of stories on the site.

>pic related
>filename related

The only reason I can think of is that they might be mentioned in the comics, but I wouldn't know personally. Is that it, or did someone just put an airship in their fic and then everyone else copied them until it became standard fair? Did I just forget the episode where they had airships or something?

I'm not complaining though, airships are cool and all, I've just noticed the trend and I was wondering if there's any real reason for it.
>>
>>26420441

I find it quite common that people on this board never overestimate art, though could you link this fic you think is better?
>>
>>26423166
Well there was a terrible rarity in canterlot episode that had an airship in it. thats the only one I can think of off the top of my head

then several fairly influential early fanfics had airships and soonevery adventure fic had to have them

>>26423248

I think Sweet and Elite started it all, with that one <1 second shot of Rarity and Blueblood in front of an airship.

IIRC one of the families in Apple Family Reunion also arrives by airship.
>>
>>26423166
Yeah, that episode in Canterlot where Rarity jews out had an airship. I'm guessing they're the equivalents to our old zeppelins, seeing that technology in Equestria points towards the early 20th century.
>>
So, I made a suggestion to fuse chapter 3 and 4 together in the GDoc.

>Suggested Chapter 3-4: Plenty of citizen are on the street with their horse drawn carriages. The Oranges observe it from their window as a storm alert passes on the radio. Switch to Twilight, Celestia and Spike arriving to board the Harmony to the FoB

>>26429252
Not him, but I can't stomach too much of Kafka myself. His books aren't bad bad, but all of them have the same flaws
>All the characters feel like tools to give monologues about Kafka's opinions
>Everyone is childishly moody, and will want to fuck then don't then yes again then maybe then if you ask me pretty please
>Monologues
>Seriously sometimes they will monologue for a page and a half
>People talking endlessly about how a system no one cares about works (This one mostly in The Process tho)
>Everyone seems to always find a way to turn bread into phylosophical conundrums
As I said, they aren't bad bad, but barely work from a purely narrative point of view. I'd enjoy him far more if he had just written treatises of his opinions instead of trying to cram them into stories.
>>
>>26429524
To be fair, Kafka never intended for his stuff to be published. He just wrote them as a pastime and didn't think his stories were very good.
He even asked a friend to burn everything he wrote after his death, but he sent it to publishers instead, which is why something something transformation fetish.
>>
>>26429583
Yeah, I'll give you that. Perhaps if he had writen them with publication in mind we'd have something completely diferent.
Its fitting now that I think of it. He planned to be the only reader, so that's why all the characters feel like personas of himself with little characterization given: they are his personas. He didn't need explanation for his own actions.
>>
>>26428943
Well personally, as a pretty antisocial guy. I need to actually think pretty hard and try not to go into cringy overjoy in dialogues, whereas I'd guess a normal person would just write stuff down based on her normal interaction.
>>

I have a confession to make.
I have gone out of my way to socialise with people for the express purpose of knowing how to better write dialogue.

the whole thing was a terrible ship and a pretty shit plotline. but its worth making note that its tagged a comedy and it got a minor chuckle out of me.

Pic related. Fun fact: it's also the only time we've ever seen the other side of the mountain Canterlot's on.

I think it's a combination of the fact airships are awesome and the fit quite nicely with the tech status of Equestria. Airplanes are a bit too modern--even bi ans triwings--but airships are not only old timey, they're also canon or at least, a small yacht-like one is.

>>26424150
I'd prefer to leave the Orange chapter alone, since it could be used to establish a sort of interlude detailing the adversities random citizens face while the M6 are trying to fix the big problems.

Other possible interlude chapters would center around the Baltimare Fire Dept. rescuing trapped citizens in the flood waters or Manehattan office workers trapped in a high rise as the storm bares down.

But if we have to condense things down, we can.

M6 fly around the eastern continent being sky pirates. Seems pretty good so far, even if the narration in the most recent chapters is kind of falling apart.
