I recently bought a Wii U for the holidays, got Xenoblade X, Mario Kart 8 and Smash. Though everything and it's minuscule space-pigglet kills me in Xenoblade X, progression is hell. As far as I can tell with MK8 multiplayer you have to add them to you friends list or whatever, then one of you has to join a multiplayer match in MK8. Once you're in a game with open spaces you let your friend know, and through their multiplayer online menu they join your game.
It's not 100%, and even after joining you can still get kicked, but that's all we got.
