It made more sense in the 60s. It was part of the whole post-war fatherless child wave in USA and Europe. And that you have to add in the whole biker/drifter/prison amount. So there was a wave of that interest, and let's be fair- the human race as a whole has a long history of that. So, The Hidden Fortress as well.
Also it was thought out in a way that made more sense before the prequels.
