if you make an OC or use "anon", you can make situations that won't be as likely ruined by new episodes adding to the official canon. Like how current Star Wars EU tends to involve situations and characters irrelevant to the plot of the films

It started as self insertion, but now Anon is more of his own character in a way. At least that's how I write him. I honestly write two versions of this character, an overall nice guy or a guy who just wants the annoyance of everyone near him to stop while getting what he wants. The latter is similar to Shrek now that I think about it...

I don't write Anon as the main character to insert as him. I write Anon as the main character because he is a blank slate. It's much easier to write a story when you have the personal connection that forms when you build someone up from scratch. Writing in the perspective of a prewritten character removes you from the experience, and personally, I find it both harder to write and a duller read.
