I don't see how they could tackle the subject or racism and acceptance any better way than to introduce a new species. If they just introduced a character from some far away land but of their same species, it would kind of be missing the point of why racism is bad. You can argue zebras don't automatically equal black people; Sapphire Shores was clearly a black pop star.
But Zecora fits the definition of a magic negro perfectly.
She has also been the only zebra depicted on the show.
All they have to do to break all implications that zebras are black people is have a one-shot zebra character with a non-black VA who isn't doing his or her best negro voice.
I think it would be funny if not all zebras rhymed, as a lot of people seem to think based off our sample size of one. Especially if there was a line about Applejack being confused that not all zebras are like Zecora. Maybe she even has trouble telling them apart because "they're all the same colors."
The rhyming thing could be for any number of reasons. Maybe it helps with her potion brewing; maybe it helps her concentrate; maybe it's a weird self-discipline thing.

I'd like an episode where another zebra (Zecora's cousin, sister or something) is going to show up and every one has prepared for traditional zebra stuff, but she shows up and she's basically gone native. She doesn't have much of an accent and none of the bangles and accessories that Zecora has, maybe a shirt and/or hat with "I (heart) New Yolk" or something. She ignores the ceremony and starts talking about the other cities and sights she's gone to so far and how excited she is about seeing Canterlot. Where they've prepared a traditional zebra feast, she wants corn dogs and stuff. Other things like that. She's a tourist, but no one accounted for that.
Also, maybe a scene where Applejack mixes them up and someone like Apple Bloom says "It's easy to tell them apart! Zecora's stripes are black-white-black-black-white-white-black and (the other zebra)'s stripes are black-black-white-black-white-white-black!" I don't know, I just think it would be a cute/funny moment.

The problem with it is that it limits what Zecora can be on the show. I am black and I don't have any problems with how Zecora has been depicted on the show. I am aware of the black magic woman stereotype and the potential problems that arise with it. Yet has been shown as intelligent,resourceful, and wise there really isn't an aura about her that is "supernatural". But the problem is that with all the episodes that she has been all Zecora has been used for is solving an issue whatever the Ponyville ponies have. Others and I would love to see some development for her beyond the problem solver when there are no other options. Kinda like we got with Cheerilee with Hearts and Hooves day. Before that all we got was that she was a school teacher.
