I like it. Sure some of the magic is lost. And the appeal of the show was simplicity and innocent optimism. A basic quality that showed up in an unusal place. The irony and culture that came with it were a huge part of why it became the meme that dominated my life though, the show is just a fraction of the content I consume.
Sometimes I feel like the only guy in the world that thinks the show got better after Faust left.
If you take off your nostalgia goggles, the huge jump in quality from Season 1 to Season 5 is obvious.

The problem with FIM is that Hasbro never made it clear to DHX where "the line" is with regards to content and themes. They've had a vague idea of where it is (no gore, profanities, sex etc.) but nothing concrete.
Now that Faust has left the show and the writers have had to endure controversy (Derpy in TLR and Twilicorn), those writers are now more comfortable writing material for the show and are thus more willing to take risks. The anti-Communist undertones of The Cutie Map or giving the CMC their marks are good examples of this.
The show was holding itself back out of fear up before, but now that risks have been taken, it's likely all uphill from here.

Well anything becomes uphill if you try to make something out to be something it will most likley never come out to be. Of all things why communism? Back when this show first kicked off, what brought people in was that all the cute, child-friendly atmosphere was juxtaposed by a sort of sincere childishness and snobbery. Twilight appeared to legitimately think her surroundings were idiot and openly whined about it on a regular basis - not just questioning other characters, but blatantly mocking them. Applejack and Rarity were as close as a kid's show could get to being at each other's throats. Pinkie was not nearly as over the top as she was now. Fluttershy occasionally showed a little resentment or passed over the edge from "excuse me squeak" to "I'm going to beat you with a hickory switch" style anger. There was all this honest negativity placed against a backdrop of child-friendly candy canes and sugar drops.
Then a bunch of retards started talking about how the show itself was pure genius and took "love and tolerate" as a literal philosophy instead of an ironic joke, and over time we've gone from loving the saccharine to watching the characters acting completely without passive-aggression.
And the people that decided the show must be "genius" continue thinking that the show is genius, when the fact is, it wasn't genius exactly so much as the early social honesty hilariously contrasted with the show's theme and message of "friendship is magic".

This led DHX to start experimenting with the show from late Season 2 onwards in order to give it it's own, unique identity.

What are you talking about? Season 2 continued the trend of having the characters be snarky and showing a little honest mean spirit from time to time. Season 3 is where they sold out on Princess Twilight - and I know it's not really selling out when the whole show is a toy commercial, but I mean that's when we hit the "fuck it, I guess she explodes and becomes god now because of the toy" wall.
After that the show has had ups and downs, but past season three I can't even distinctly recall many episodes. I remember several pretty strongly from the earlier seasons, not much after. Tirek was a thing. I remember Twilight going to a McDonalds because that was fucking off-key for a show where characters used to sit outside on toadstools and bails of hay. Season five had the griffons - they were in poverty because Gilda was a shit scone baker.
Season 1 was NOT demonstrating "this is why girl's cartoons are bad". It was legitimately just trying to make a fun show and it let the characters be mean and snipe at each other because, in lessons about social life, it probably makes sense to admit people are like that pretty damned often.

I felt Season 4 was a return to form, and season 5 continued in about the same quality.
Rainbow Rocks was a MASSIVE improvement over the first movie. Friendship Games wasn't as good as Rainbow Rocks but still enjoyable.
