It's a rough estimate and is only used as such. To get a better guage based on body type you need an actual physical.
I lift but as a nordic manlet I look more like I belong in Thorin's Company, beard and all. While I have some chub on my lower abs my actual body fat % is about 9 while BMI classifies me as morbidly obese.
