I got here in 2014 and there seemed to be more drama back then, like that Ferguson comic with tumblr rage, or the gawker article on the guy on /mlp/ who boiled a pony doll in a jar of cum. I feel like the real answer is that quality is subjective, and people perceive the board as getting worse only because they are getting tired of the same threads over and over, when at first the threads were not as tiring. It is ridiculous to say cancer did not exist back then, however. Cancer has always existed on 4chan, it is just that we didn't perceive it as cancer because we used to be the cancer.
This image was a parody of the guy who boiled a pony doll in semen, and is one of the first images I have from /mlp/.

I've been around long enough to grow disillusioned with a number of boards on many occasions for a lot of reasons. Some I've gone back to, some I haven't. Some I miss, go back, and leave again immediately. I'm looking at you, /co/.
Still, over the course of many years, I've figured out that it's not because the makeup of the board changed because that's a given; the /b/ I thought was awesome when I started my undergrad is not the /b/ I accidentally clicked on last week. Rather, it's that I didn't or couldn't change with it.
It's really the same on all the boards: adapt or die. We are largely unaccountable for what we say, think or do and so a lot of garbage gets tossed around. Most of it falls to the wayside, some of it sticks. And over time, board culture is made, but it doesn't stop when we deem it convenient. It keeps going, growing, picking up ideas from other, newer people who haven't been here as long. And it's frustrating that the things you thought were fun aren't cool or enjoyable for the collective consciousness anymore. You get left behind by a community that you helped to make.
So, what is there left to do? Well, you can sit and stew in it, which really does wonders for bringing out that savory, salty flavor when a thread like this gets made. You could also be reactionary and try to pull the board back to how things 'used to be' when they were 'better'. You can laugh and realize that a lot of newfags are just as excited and stumble-happy as you were when you started out and take delight in hazing them. Or you could just leave. Because if you're not having fun with your free time, what's the point in having it in the first place?

/mlp/ is actually not that bad compared to how lost and fucked other boards are considering the roots of each board and their cultures.
The only days that /mlp/ was actually good and not a shithole where you can post pony and be as big of an autist as you wanna be was during the days of August 2012 till December 2012.
