The melody that was played in the background during the Ursa Minor confrontation is still one of my favorites of the show. Back then I thought it was going to be Twilight's theme song, really enchanting fitting the element of magic.

Man, I loved this episode so much. It really pushed home how dangerous the ponies' world actually was - that a couple of bumbling kids could casually walk out from town, and without much trouble find a fucking giant star-bear. And then it's parent! Even Trixie aside, I loved how fantastic and different this episode made the world feel; between this, Dragonshy, and the parasprite one I felt like we could expect to see something new and insane creature showing up every couple episodes.

in S1 the US iTunes are a bit too washed out, AU are just right and CC means the saturation is higher. In my opinion the CC is way too overblown unless you have a real shitty display or something. Personally I have S1 in AU and the rest in US iTunes.

I almost forgot there was going to be one of these threads today, glad I caught it. This is a pretty cool episode imo, maybe the best one yet. I like when the episodes have a sort of two-sided moral like this, where it warns against being too humble like Twilight or too boastful like Trixie. Very Aristotelian. Some people have argued that Trixie's boasting is justified because she's putting on a show and that's just her job, but she's awfully eager to challenge the other ponies to match her skills and when they accept all she does is wreck their shit. And not even by demonstrating equal talent, but just by humiliating them. I mean, so what? I could probably beat up Stephen Hawking but that doesn't prove I'm a better physicist. So nah, Trixie a cunt.
It's also notable that this is the first episode to feature Snips and Snails and I have a couple of thoughts about them in this episode.

I like the explanation of unicorn magic at the beginning. Buildin' that lore real nice.

Rewatching these old episodes takes me back to 2011 when pony YTP were at their prime.

Cute, I don't think I've ever noticed that the neon Ursa actually makes all that low volume hum and buzz. The amount of detail this show has from time to time never fails to surprise me.

Shit gets pretty crazy by the end of the episode. I wouldn't say Twilight's magic was all that feeble compared to today.
Another thing that irks me are sonic rainbooms. When introduced it's something that when happened first basically laid down the groundwork for the Elements, and both first and second time were something that Dash had to push herself real hard to achieve. Skip a couple seasons and suddenly she farts out two of them while still gaining altitude.

In my opinion, it's more that originally her major feats were obviously difficult to pull off, often time-limited, and plot-important.
Now she often pulls off entirely unseen feats as visual gags and quick throw-away moments (turning into a drawn image, ZA WARUDOing an entire valley) which makes them seem less meaningful (and Twilight more powerful) even if the feats aren't dramatically more impressive.
Overall a great, fun episode. It's kinda funny that Trixie got so popular, much more than Gilda from the last episode, even though they both have the same screen time. Guess that's the power of the waifufags.

You know, what surprised me during our rewatches was back when in Applebuck Season Twilight just teleported like five or six times while talking to AJ in about a minute, like it was nothing. Feels almost like abundant use of magic and a jump from Ticket Master when she got fucked up just by TPing her and Spike to the Treebrary.

Well it may have been a few months. The Ticket Master explicitly takes place in summer, probably not long after the first episode which was the summer solstice, while Applebuck Season is already harvest time.

It's still way too much saturated. Back when we only had the US iTunes I was pretty bummed because the CC'd versions always went overboard with it, and while it's fine in some sceneries, when Pinkie or Dash was on screen it was just too much.
Luckily then came the Australian iTunes version which fixed all that.
