He'd never been in such absolute and isolating quiet. A gentle hiss began to fill his ears. It came in waves offset from the sound of his heartbeats and grew louder with each anxious second.
Unable to tolerate confinement, he pushed the blankets off himself and move to the edge of the bed. His breath became shaky as his sweat covered body was exposed to the cool, dry. Undeterred by the cold, Kalumnia slid down onto his unsteady hooves and walked toward the door.
The short distance to the door was enough to force the weakened changeling to rest a moment and consider a retreat to the warmth of the bed. He shut his eyes and took a breath of determination. A cell is a cell no matter how comfortable.
The door gave a quiet groan that echoed down the empty hall. “Bright Skies?” Kalumnia said cautiously to be sure the pony had really left. There was no answer. He pulled the door open and cringed back from the light that shone in.
The hallway was closed off at one end with a door at either side. Light spilled in from the other end that appeared to open into two separate rooms. Keeping against the wall for stability, Kalumnia made his way toward the open end.
To his left, the hall gave way to a living room. It wasn't a large room but even still it seemed sparsely furnished with only a single couch and a few end tables. What was there seemed oddly space, as if someone had started to put together a functioning room and had given up halfway through. At the far end of the room there was a small fireplace. He didn't bother to investigate further but the remains of paper were visible in the ashes of a fire long extinguished by neglect.

Smooth tiled floor met his hooves to the right. White surfaces of the kitchen reflected the overcast daylight from outside the wide thinly covered windows. A modest table of two settings filled the space just in front of the windows. Not far from that spot was an island counter that seemed to divide the room into both dining and kitchen areas. On the wall opposite was the standard row of counter space and cabinets with the sink set out of the way in the corner. And finally at the far end was a mudroom and undoubtedly a backdoor that would provide him with the inconspicuous escape that he was hoping for.
Kalumnia moved to the sink and tilted his muzzle under the faucet before pulling the lever. He had every intention of leaving as soon as he could, but even in his foggy, tired state he knew he would not get far without tending to his basic need. The water was cool and had a very subtle metallic taste that wasn't at all unpleasant. Carefully he pulled the lever open further allowing more water to drown his thirst.
A sudden knock at the door caused Kalumnia to gasp, sucking in a mouthful of water. He shoved the lever back and coughed violently for a second before pressing his muzzle shut with hooves. The door opened as Kalumnia froze, listening in terror. He knew that he was far too weak to change form and fighting would be out of the question. If it came down to it, running might be the only option, but in his sorry state the strain alone might just spell the end for him.
“Bright?” the intruder called out in a young mare’s voice. “Are you home?”.
Kalumnia held still frozen in fear. He'd never in his life felt so exposed. So helpless. He shut his eyes tight trying keep quiet but the urge to cough grew until a small involuntary sound escaped his muzzle.

The mare’s hoofsteps sounded closer as she ventured further into the house. A pie plate floated into view held in a field of levitation magic then suddenly stopped.
“June!” Bright Skies called out before he could control the tone of his voice. The pie drifted back out of the kitchen.
“Oh! Sorry, Bright. I thought you were home and I just wanted to check up and see how you were doing.”
“Oh no. I was just out doing some shopping. Y-you know before I head to work.” Bright Skies stammered trying for some reason to sound a bit overly cheerful.
“I'm glad you're taking it so well, but I wanted to tell you not to worry. You can't take a day or two off if you want. I can take care of things.”
“Are… Are you sure?”
“Of course. I could use the practice working on my own anyway. And you'll still be in town if I run into any trouble, right?”
“Yeah. I've got nowhere else to be.”
The light in the doorway shifted as June stepped out letting the door close behind her. Kalumnia finally let out a fit of muffled coughs before setting his head down on the counter with a sigh of relief.
“Take care of yourself, Bright.” June's words returned as the door opened again.
“I will. Thanks.” Bright Skies replied as best he could while holding something in his mouth.
Bright Skies soon appeared holding the glass pie dish in his teeth. He walked to the table and set it down before unstrapping his saddlebags.
“You're back early.” Kalumnia stated flatly.
Bright Skies gasped turning quickly to face the changeling. Neither said anything as each of them tried to guess the other’s intentions.
“Y-You're not going to attack me, are you?” Bright Skies asked nervously.

Kalumnia gave him a prying look that made the pegasus feel a bit nervous. “She seemed concerned about you. Anything I need to worry about?”
Bright Skies’s ears fell back as he turned his gaze just enough to break eye contact. “No… I don't really want to talk about it right now. But… it's nothing.”
“It doesn't sound like nothing. But that's your business.” Kalumnia said with a cold indifference. “As long as it doesn't bring anymore unexpected guests while I'm here, it's not my concern.”
Bright Skies didn't bother to look back to Kalumnia. The callousness of the changeling only served to deepen the already open wound of recent days.
The air seemed to grow heavy with pained silence that Kalumnia found difficult to ignore. “Why did you come back so early, anyway? Don't trust the changeling alone in your house?”
The change of subject worked just as Kalumnia had hoped bringing Bright Skies’s attention around to the here and now. “Oh. Not it's not that. I mean I was going to get an early start at work but… I felt bad going off and leaving you without at least trying to make sure you had something to eat. So I did some shopping.”
