So lets see whats changed in the past 8 months and where the new season will fit into the rankings now that it's had roughly two weeks to settle.

And AKR is definitely gone, and Meghan will probably no do much, either.
It's not looking great. Some of the new writers definitely showed that they can watch old episodes, have continuity, and write decent episodes, but I'm not sure any of the remaining writers is cut out to be a head writer and make sure they keep it like that. Especially since it's not sure whether Haber is still on the show, as he seems to be the most likely candidate due to writing EqG3 and the S5 finale. I haven't made my list yet, but I think this will put my optimism for the future down to 6 or so, even if I want to put it higher due to how amazing S5 was.

Personally I'm more excited for the fact that they might give Berrow more episodes that aren't so limited and that Vogel is moving to the creative level. Those are two very dedicated people. Plus you've got Confalone on there too. Only sad thing is that you've probably got more Dusedau as well. Polsky is still on and he's gotten pretty good.

I put my optimism high without think about the writers. How many people do the scripts go through again? I know it goes through the story editor, Hasbro, and whatever story meeting they have when the scripts are made, but can't remember if the directors are in on those too. If they are then I'd feel better cause they're clearly still very invested in the show from what I can tell.

That said, the Vogel case is definitely exciting, and Berrow and Confalone are in my "promising new writers" list together with those two ladies that work together. Confalone just needs to be reminded to keep down the randomness.
I'm not sure which S1 writer wanted back in, but I seem to recall something similar, too. It might well be Morrow since she had a S5 episode after not being in S4.
I think Dusedau actually has potential. I enjoyed What about Discord, even if it was more unconventional, and I still think that Princess Spike had at least two setups for decent lessons, but somehow managed to absolutely shit all over the place and use a convoluted third lesson that was forced into the episode. It's sad, but I think he may get his shit together.

Miller is supervising director now that Thiessen left that spot for the 2017 movie and he has that Denny Lu guy taking his place as director (see pic related, I think it was like that for the entire second part of S5). So yeah, it's Miller (and Lu) from now on. Also her episode is actually pretty much the only episode of FiM I'd be OK with calling filler, since it's pretty much the only one without any sort of lesson and which purely exists to bring this plot point in. This. That was honestly the most surprising thing to me when I saw the chart. Return of Harmony is definitely a good opener, either the best or tied with S1 for the best, and it's in the top 30 episodes of the show, but I don't think it's top 10 and I was very startled to see people calling it top 5. Return of Harmony has always been /mlp/'s favorite episode (just stating that).
I think it's great because the villain is properly threatening (Nightmare Moon was meh), but also not actually just out for destruction or something. Chaotic neutral or whatever it is in those alignment charts. He just wants to have fun, but also not have anyone interfere with it. The other part is that he actually manipulates the heroes by psychological pressure and manages to turn them against their own nature and thus ruptures their friendship, making Twilight actually give up (granted, it's not only psychological, he does help a bit, but still, he's the only villain to do that so far. Starlight didn't convince the mane 6). And the only thing that saves the day is Twilight learning/remembering that Friendship is not always about agreeing, and that you shouldn't give up because of a few quarrels. It's a powerful lesson and very well executed. It makes you feel and builds tension.
Obviously not everyone will rank it as top episode, but it's one of the very few episodes that are universally seen as (very) good.
Also it has Q and a nod to Star Wars. And Discord is just a great character.

The plot felt very quick and impacting with Discord being set loose, the ponies being transformed, Twilight struggling, and then the ponies being turned back to fight Discord.
Discord himself was a great villain and his means of ridding himself of problems (riddles, depressing the mane 6 instead of capturing them, planting a tree years in advance) always amuses me. They did a good job of keeping him front and center without having him have to constantly fight off his opposition (while enemies like NMM or Chrissy act from the shadows and Sombra and Tirek actively attack those they are against)
The dilemma being the mane 6 losing their elements was a good concept (maybe not in originality, but definitely in how it was handled) and it did a great job of keeping Discord from having to actively work against the ponies. In terms of the mane 6 themselves, both the motivation they showed prior to being turned, and how they acted during and shortly after (especially RD) was done very well.
Sorry for the lack of coherency, not as much an organized analysis as much as a blast of what comes to mind when I think of the episode.

Im not saying Amending Fences is a bad ep, its a prettt good one, remembering a very old ep and giving Princess Twilight a problem she cant resolve is based, but it doesnt outstands of what we have seen of the show unlike RoH, which psychologically broke the characters with very good reasons, something the show has not done again

Another thing I don't get is why the episode acts like RD being loyal to Ponyville is inherently more virtuous than being loyal to Cloudsdale. At the beginning of the episode she leaves Cloudsdale to help Ponyville fight cotton candy clouds while other characters do things that subtly remind us of their elements, implying it's a commendable act of loyalty and Discord "corrupts" her by getting her to leave in an attempt to save Cloudsdale. What's so wrong about helping Cloudsdale anyway? I guess Ponyville is the most important place in the world because it's where the main characters live.Don't take this too seriously, I still like the episode.

Second, Twilight's old friends being OK with Twilight not really doing anything with them for all that time had also not really be done before (it's pretty much the first time they say that friendship doesn't always need to be as close as the mane 6's is and that you can still be friends without seeing each other for a long time. Even Cranky came around in the end). Thirdly, Moondancer actually was psychologically broken with very good reasons. She was like Twilight, not very social and outgoing, so she barely had friends, and Twilight was her closest one, the one pony she really felt a connection to. Then she got encouraged to go out a bit more and decided to throw a party, but guess what? Her best friend, the one she could always count on and who would be able to support her in her endeavor, didn't come. And never came back. Without saying goodbye. Which broke Moondancer, fitting for her personality.
The episode actually deals with a real, psychological friendship problem and also shows that friends don't need to always be close to still be friends. I would say that qualifies very much for your criteria.

I've been rewatching seasons 4-5 because I've only seen those episodes once and I'm surprised by how much more enjoyment I'm getting out of them. S4 was my least favorite full-length season by far, and while it's still my least favorite, it's mostly just due to the much weaker second half. I guess it must be because I could separate the expectations and drama at the time from the episode and just enjoy the cute ponies.

I definitely think I could appreciate S4-S5 more on a rewatch.
I think part of the reason S1-S2 feels so comfy to everyone is we've all seen it more, so we got more out of it. We remember all the high points and learn to ignore the low points through repetition, not because the episodes were inherently better. You are also right about the lack of drama. I joined at the end of S2 and marathoned the first two seasons without expectation. I couldn't be critical because I had no standard to compare against.
Another reason is that MLP rewards rewatching. The first time, I can't focus on much more than the (usually shallow) main story. When I watch already knowing the main story, I can give my attention to more subtle details.

Oddly enough, I have near opposite feelings towards Season 4. Season 4 is my favorite season and that is largely because of how well I thought it took off near the middle and leading up to the finale. As for /mlp/, I'm unsure why people go on about drama when nearly every episode in s4 was incredibly well received. Most every episode of s4 was praised beyond the real shitters and s4 was ranked above S1 and neck and neck with S2
For the show overall, I re watch the seasons on what is often a monthly if not bi monthly basis. I've obviously watched season 1 and 2 much more than the later seasons but my opinion on the later seasons (disregarding season 3) never wavered in believing that while season 1 and 2 are slightly more consistent, the episodes overall are weaker than a lot of the episodes in season 4 and 5.
I'm curious. I know there's one person already working on a list that's going to likely take a month, which is perfectly fine, but how many more of you are going it slowly or are working on a list as well?

I take the lowest rank number, in your case 120, and for each episode subtract it's rank from that number to get it's ranking points for your list. So in yours Keep Calm and Flutter on would get 119, Cutie map parts 2 and 1 118 and 117 respectively and so on.
Charts in the final picture are the products of a bunch of averages and sums of those collected values across all the submitted lists.

Keep Calm and Flutter On completely changed my perception of Fluttershy and my attitude towards reforming Discord.
Lots of people think it was rushed, but that's only because it was such a big change. It was perfect for what could be fit in one episode. The entire episode was dedicated to the reformation, instead of something half-assed in the last five minutes like we see with other villain reformations. We get to see Discord transition from laughing at the attempt at the beginning, to the dinner party where doubt creeps in, to revelation that he does care about friends (which was emotional without being sappy). This is made subtle, yet probable, thanks to Fluttershy. Fluttershy really shines here. Not only does she carry the responsibility in a way no one besides Twilight has ever done, she has to go against the opinions of her friends. How many other characters have done that? Through it all, she manages to never break character or lose the moral high ground. There are no friendship lasers. She changes Discord by having the kindness to overlook his minor faults. She makes a friend by going out on a limb to offer friendship first. This expands on her strange resistance to him in Return of Harmony quite well. Overall, I think this makes it the episode closer to the show's core moral than any other. Discord even gives us a title drop at the end.
Besides the story, the humor from the interactions of Discord and the other ponies is excellent. We have plenty of visual gags (roll my eyeballs) and situational humor (are you eating paper?). I can't be the only one that laughed and cheered as Discord terrorized Angel. That fucker deserved it.
Dialogue was flawless.

I remember that back when the episode aired I wasn't quite happy with it, mostly just because I didn't want to see Discord redeemed and mindfucked into friendship. Thankfully he kept his goofy personality and still does his old shenanigans, only trying to act innocent, so it's all good.

The survey system they used has them do one on one battles as long as they want without generating a list at the end like ours. The site they used, allourideas.com is it, compiles all the results, and when I checked last night they had 80,000ish of thoses one on ones done over the past week.

Character developpement and plot? The plot felt like a poor remake of Green Isn't Your Color, as if the plot was just an afterthough tacked on after they decided they needed something to go with Al's OC.

As for pinkie herself, at no time in the series has Pinkie been confronted with a problem stemming from another pony out doing what she is best at. It tackles how she handles such a situation, does so differently from the situation in Gilda the Brush Off by having what Pinkie herself brings to the table into question, and allows for a situation where the issue with Pinkie is not being critical in her interaction with others, but of her usefulness.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Sure, the plot isn't exactly a copy of a previous one down to the details, but it didn't feel very inspired or interesting to me.

This happens all the time though. Rarara gone the spotlight stolen in Green Isn't your Color, Applejack had the same reaction in the last roundup because she someone was better than her at rodeo, Bluefast was mad for being assigned as the sidekick of lightning dust, although that was a different situation.
The plot really doesn't make that episode shine or stand out.

You're right that it wasn't the same situation, I'm only arguing that re-running an easy theme "played out in a different enough manner" isn't exactly great storytelling. It's not awful, but it's just not what I'd call a redeeming quality. I wouldn't mind if the rest of the episode didn't also fall short for me.

That part of the episode is what ruined it for me, and you may not agree, but while the rest of the episode was okay, I feel it's not enough to make up for it.
I didn't find the goof off good, I wasn't fond of the music or its lyrics, the 4th wall breaking I found really out of place, I'm not happy that Al's character is basically a Pinkie clone with extra cringe and a sob story. The rest was just okay. I didn't like this episode.

eh, it's about what I expected anyway, though I expected Fluttershy to do a bit better in the average than she is. Then I remembered she's pretty unpopular here so whatever.
Rarity has actually had quite a few of her episodes go down a lot since last year, if she was performing as strongly I suspect she'd beat Twilight, but not Luna.
