They came from a random high quality screencap edit, so no real origin story that I know of.
As for the prominent headcannons about them: They have about or just below pony level sapience/intelligence. They possess (usually) three long prehensile tongue/tentacles. They have large fleshy tails and lightning bolt like eye markings. They are usually friendly and curious. They tend to express affection by swallowing others into some sort of stomach pouch thing before eventually releasing them unharmed.
