Any good fanfics about magic? Like Aurors, Archmages, Sorcerers, Magicians, etc?

Also, how do I write fanfiction?

What? they are good.
Celestia code has it's problems, but it's good nonetheles.

>first thing it says is DON'T PANIC
I needed that.

Also, I think I read Moonstone Cup, it was 7/10 at the least.
>>
>>25706728
>What? they are good.
I've already posted about it before, but basically: Moonstone Cup's story doesn't actually go anywhere until the very end when some big bad appears and gets defeated in five minutes, and then everything is fine again.
And like I said back then, Wizards of Mickey comic did a MUCH better job at making a magic tournament look interesting, while also having good worlbuilding and a well-paced story, and it's a fucking Mickey Mouse comic book series for children.

>Celestia code has it's problems, but it's good nonetheles.
Celestia Code focuses on imaginary obstacles in the form of the changelings, and forced drama in form of Chrysalis and Bland Sidekick's crush on Twilight.
The entire plot is "there's this thing RIGHT BELOW US that we could get at any time, but oh shucks, there's this SUPER POWERFUL scary spell that Twilight manages to counter by making up a plan on the spot and these SUPER SCARY changeling guards that will definitely tell Chrysalis right away about this dangerous weapon that we're going to get rid of anyway.

They're not bad, but they're far from good.

>Very well written Twilight PoV with creative use of telekinesis and shield spells. A bit of character development, but again very little.
So they aren't stories, then, just barebones ideas for literally anything but written fiction.
You see, when I'm reading a story, I assume there's a story there to be read. I guess if the point of that story isn't to have a story, then you're absolutely right and these stories are absolutely worth it if you like it when absolutely nothing happens.
>>
>>25706942
>One fight. With one enemy. At the very end.
I think you kinda sorta missed the rest of the fic. From the top of my head I can remember a fight against a dragon and the one against Trixie, and I read it like a year ago.
>So they aren't stories, then, just barebones ideas for literally anything but written fiction.
If we were talking about political pamphlets like El Matadero by Echeberria I'd agree with you, but in this case I don't.
Some stories focus in character development, some in adventure, some in worldbuilding, some in cool fights. Stop trying to shoehorn your limited point of view of what is "Written fiction" as objetive.
>>
>>25706977
>I can remember a fight against a dragon and the one against Trixie
You're right, but I'd argue that those weren't real fights, they were just dick-measuring contests for magicians. There was no tension because getting anyone hurt was against the rules.

>Some stories focus in character development, some in adventure, some in worldbuilding, some in cool fights.
I think you're missing my point, so let me rephrase that:
I guess if the point of that story isn't to have a PLOT WHERE SOMETHING HAPPENS, then you're absolutely right (...)
Because honestly, Moonstone Cup felt like mindless filler in between fight scenes that aren't worth waddling through all the unnecessary bullshit and Celestia Code was just a bland fic where nobody acted rationally and simple artifact retrieval acted as an excuse to have four random characters exchange random dialogue that DOESN'T ACTUALLY MATTER TO THE STORY AT ALL. We give bad stories shit for worthless filler, but as soon as a slightly better one includes it, you want to defend it?

>You're right, but I'd argue that those weren't real fights, they were just dick-measuring contests for magicians. There was no tension because getting anyone hurt was against the rules.

It's a tournament story. The tension is in "who wins?" (one tends to have a pretty good guess, tho) and "how?" plus the tension in the stories surrounding the side characters who clearly won't win the tourney, but might have more compelling stories for all that.

Stop right there Anon. Yes, you.

You've always wanted to write. Maybe you already do. Or maybe you want to, but you can't ever figure out how to start?
Is something missing? Do you sit down, feeling sure that you're going to start writing, but end up procrastinating or just giving up, a few paragraphs, sentences, or even just a black document staring mockingly back at you from the empty screen?

Well, now you're going to write. Not a lot. Let's say more than 100 words, but less than 300. Or something else. Rules are made to be broken. Don't worry about quality, we're all shitty writers in here.

Turn off the internet if you have to. Go write by hand, the retype it on the computer if you need to go that far. Anything, as long as you write. Then post it here. Don't worry to much about editing. Just post it. You're Anon. Nobody gives a shit if you suck.

Or you could not write. Go pretend to be a retard in some thread. Fap or clop for the third time today. Play some games you don't really care for. Waste more time, wishing that you could just write.

>TL;DR Stop right there faggot. Write a story, a poem, porn, dialogue, monologue or whatever. Try to stay between 100 and 300 words, but fuck the rules if you want to. Post it here.

Never do that, especially if it's 500 words. Throw it into a scrap document. You never know when you can mine it for later in the story, or even a whole new story. And at worst, you can throw it onto a blog post for the readers to see. I've found they really enjoy "deleted scenes."

Carcino did. Imma copypaste what he said.
---
So yeah, I just blew my afternoon on this, so here's a half-assed review: My initial impression was not wrong. This fic needs work.

It's first-person POV, which isn't automatically bad, but the author doesn't use it very well. The first-person perspective switches frequently back and forth between Night Light and Twilight Velvet, for one thing, and while there are at least distinct chapter/scene breaks to alert the reader to them, they're still jarring and not terribly smooth. For another, the author can't keep their tenses straight, and the narration lapses back and forth between past and present tense often enough to be annoying.

Far more annoying was the author's apparent lack of knowledge about what belongs in the same paragraph or not. I lost count of the number of times NL and TV (or any two characters really) were having a conversation and one character would do some action or have some thoughtful commentary in the same paragraph that the other character is speaking. It's aggravating as all hell, and between that and extremely minimal use of dialogue tags it can be very difficult to discern who exactly is talking sometimes.

Spelling and grammar errors are relatively rare, but noticeable, with excessive/improper use of commas being the most frequent offender. An example line:
>That colt is an over confident, self entitled, bully headed, jerk. I mean, I, of course knew that he existed.
Another glaring one was "One's self" instead of "oneself." But beyond that, nothing truly horrible jumped out at me.
>>
>>25712784
Characterization-wise, Night Light is a complete robot. It feels like the author was basically trying to write him like Spock, but all he manages to do is spout a lot of big words and emotionless, overly-formal dialogue. At least until his big emotional breakdown following a fairly typical 'stuck up nerd gets drunk at a college party' sequence.

Twilight Velvet isn't quite as bad, but she's not at all how I would have pictured her personally: she's arrogant, bitchy, and quick to jump to conclusions on emotional whims, and while I like that this author kept with the idea that Velvet's (eventual) career is as a fiction writer, it's hard to sympathize and root for her when the first significant thing she does on the subject is get pissed off at Night Light for giving her a (harsh but fair and thorough) professional critique of her work where her professors were merely letting her off easy by critiquing her like a student. Nothing is more annoying than authors who respond to criticism by getting pissed off at the person critiquing.

All in all I was kind of underwhelmed. It's not terrible, but it's not that great either. The fic's unfinished at the moment, but considering the most recent chapter included a disjointed and overdramatic flash forward to "oh I'm SO mad at him I never want to see him again" teen drama, I'm not super compelled to keep following it.
I'd give it a 6/10 at best.

(Also I find it incredibly, hilariously ironic that a fic where the driving premise is Night Light serving as an editor to Velvet is itself in such dire need of editing.)

>mfw people arguing on Fimfic about "ménage à trois" not meaning threesome in French
>>
>>25713376
From my mystical deduction powers stemming of my knowledge of Spanish and English, menage sounds kinda like management and trois like tres (Three), and I can definitely see how "Management of three"/"Three who manage" could be translated into threesome.
>>
>>25713387
Ménage means house, if I recall correctly.
And if three people are living in a house, you know they have to fuck.
I mean, it's only polite.
>>
>>25713387
Problem is people using the literal translation, "household of three", as an argument against it meaning threesome.
>>
>>25713409
How retard do you need to be to argue because a language extrapolates and uses metaphors that really, really stretch the meaning of words?
I mean, they are talking English for fuck sake, and I've had many an anglo speaker confessing that even to them the language feels like a monkey took a typewriter.
>>
>>25713402
It can mean a lot, but in this context, it means household. The whole sentence actually means "household with 3 instead of the "household of 3".

Thus me having to deal with Fimfags who think they understand French with a Google translate degree saying "ménage à trois" doesn't mean threesome.

Nope.

I've been trying to work on my reading first. Right now I hardly know how to break stories down, let alone assemble them from scratch.

It sucks, because I do love writing as much as anyone else when I find sudden inspiration, which has happened sparsely throughout the years. But still, I do need to plan.

Also, feel free to give me something to read. I'm currently implementing some reading techniques.

It probably sucks. And that synopsis is baffling. He's writing a synopsis for each chapter, or are they supposed to be separate stories?

>>25714763
6/10. Could have been crackier. You also could have parodied the "x is a changeling" genre a little more. Maybe add some pointless "who am I really?" melodrama that's easily resolved, preferably with something like a giant salami.

>>25716006
I've been too busy editing the weird clopfic and doing school stuff to get working on those two oneshots I have lying around.
>>
>>25716006
I really need to knuckle down and write the little follow-up fic to BTWOE. I know the general plot, I just have to fucking start it.

There's also the fact that I need to refresh my pony senses. It's been weeks since I've actually watched any FIM, and I like to watch at least three episodes before I write something, just to retune my ear for the cadence of the show's dialogue.
>>
How familiar is the average reader with the comics? I want to use Radiant Hope as one of my main characters but I'm not sure if people will know who she is.
>>
>>25719270
Im aware they exist but ive never read any of them.
Well there was that one hentai one but I'm pretty sure that wasn't an official Hasbro release.

Likely only the most autistic of horsefuckers will be familiar with the material
>>
>>25719270
I remember only really liking the Nightmare Rarity and the Big Mac comics.
I haven't read any of them since late 2014, though, and neither have a lot of people. Just put "X character is from the comics" and nobody will give you troubles.

I don't have that problem.
I hide from it by intentionally writing things I know are shit under the guise of being so bad they're good.

I've only written shitty greens as of late.
About 22000 words worth of greens in the past 25 or so days.
>>
>>25724610
Well, I've canceled everything I've written currently cause of how shit they are. I refuse to delete them, that'd be running away from them.
All linking them will do at this point is make me look like an attention whore for canceled stories and everyone will tell me what already know, that they are fucking shit. It'd be like after I got finished beating a dead horse I give someone else the bat so they could start beating it.
I can link the pastebins for the shitty ass greens I plan on expanding, fixing the grammar problems of, and turning into a story since they are more recent.

Hey guys, I'm turning a shitty AiE green I wrote into a full fic because I like the idea behind it. My question is, would it be better to use Spike in place of anon, or is there another character I can't remember that I should use? Gilda might work too, but using anon seems like a bad idea for a serious fic. The only requirement is that it isn't a pony or Zecora, since she already has a role.
>>
>austraeoh pt.8
>200,000 words already
>only 61 chapters in
>at this rate it will be 630,000 words for this one book alone
>overall series has already exceeded its original projected wordcount and is not even 2/3 of the way done
>finished series will likely be 4-5million words at least

Is Blooming Moon Chronicles (BlackRoseRaven's series) still the longest series on the site? Because I think Austraeoh is likely to surpass it within 18-24 months.
>>
>>25727634
BMC still is the longest at 4,4 million.
Austraeoh currently is 2.5 million words long while on its eight book. It is entirely possible it will overcome it.
>>
>>25727680
It'll be close. There are 739 chapters left, so at the current series average (1733 words/chapter) it will only hit 4.1 million. But the average chapter length has generally been increasing book over book, and if it continues at the same rate as the current book (3278 words/chapter), the series will exceed 4.9 million.
>>
>>25727747
I can totally imagine SSnE releasing longer chapters every now and then just to make sure he gets to make it the longest series ever.
>>
So, the latest fimfarchive came out 2 weeks ago, but I haven't had a chance to download it until today. After parsing through the JSON, I've come up with the following numbers:

Can you produce a list of stories whose 'url' JSON field ends with a 1-2 digit number? So it looks like 'http://www.fimfiction.net/story/123456/1'. Basically I'm wondering if anyone has tried naming their story "1" so that trying to view the story page instead opens the first chapter.

I generally loathe Anon as a 'character' and AiE in general so my first instinct is to tell you to use a real character, and I wouldn't mind a Spike-centric story, but I'd have to hear more about the plot before I give a solid opinion on exactly who fits it best.

It's not advisable using a canon character unless you're planning on using their personality. It can't just be "anon but with a Spike/Gilda/Iron Will skin."

Given the "no pony" rule, I'm guessing you're going for a "fish out of water" kind of angle. "Spike's not a real pony" is a plot that's frequently done in Spikefics, so you may want to use someone else.

I disagree in this case. I'm not generally a fan of AiEs, but if your protagonist is so generic that literally anyone can stand in for it without much trouble, then you may as well throw him in a suit and call him anon. otherwise you'll just wind up pissing off gildafags, spikefags, or the husbandos of whatever non-pony canon character you use

>>25730669
>since no one's reading/reviewing it.
sorry man, but its just not my thing and I have little interest in your notsexual fetishes. though if you ever got back into regent I'd read that
>>
>>25727597
Two options, frienderino:

1. You "replace" Anon with Spike or whomever you feel like, but you'll need to do a more extensive rewrite for that to matter. See, if your main character matters so little in the story that you can swap them out with anyone, it's likely a bad story, and it will be detrimental to use a established canon character. So if you decide to go with Spike, you must rewrite it not only from greentext to prose, but also adapt the character and the plot to account for the frankly monumental change it is to swap a main character. You'll need to do more than just search and replace "Anon" with "Spike".

2. Just use an OC. Yeah, it's generally a big red flag, but you're doing a greentext adaptation anyway. If you do this, you won't have to do extensive rewrites.
>>
>>25731113
>if your main character matters so little in the story that you can swap them out with anyone, it's likely a bad story
Unless it's a story that doesn't depend on the quality of the main protagonist. For example, at least some stories from; Lovecraft, Tolkien, Kafka, Čapek. You could replace the main protagonist (if there is one) with a redshirt and it wouldn't make a lick of difference to the impact of the ideas, environment and messages in such stories.

Most of FiM fiction is, however, protagonist-centric, or at least nearly so due to the prevalence of slice of life, personal drama and other romantic themes. The absolute majority of fiction is meant to shock you, cheer you up, make you laugh or otherwise bring an emotional response - if any at all - rather than make you think.

>>
>>25731170
>Unless it's a story that doesn't depend on the quality of the main protagonist.
That is not a given in this case, as he's working within an established universe. I'd agree with you if we were talking about replacing Anon with another character who's very existence doesn't have critical significance for the universe the story takes place in, like replacing him with a background pony or an OC, but by choosing to take an established character he'd have to make adjustments. You could feasibly replace Frodo Baggins with Brodo Faggins (OC circular dough of and iron and carbon alloy) without changing much of the story, but you couldn't replace him with Beorn without having to tweak a few things.

>Lovecraft, Tolkien, Kafka, Čapek.
Going to comment primarily on Lovecraft and Kafka here, as I haven't read Čapek (yet).
I disagree with you here. You say that the character doesn't matter for the ideas invoked by the stories, but the characters are created and portrayed as they are precisely because they're tools to express those ideas. It's funny that you mention Lovecraft, because he's actually quite explicit about that at times. An easy target is "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family".
>>
>>25731592
I'm not claiming that the identity of the protagonist is always absolutely vital, you could for example replace the "narrator" characters of "The Colour out of Space" and "The Music of Erich Zann", but that's sort of an artefact of the way Lovecraft writes. He uses the protagonist "narrators" to recall or retell the stories of other individuals that arguably make up the real subject of the book. You can replace the nameless surveyor, but you can't replace Nahum Gardner. I doubt the Anon who wrote the AiE story wrote in this style.
Regardless, it's often vital for Lovecraft that his characters in some stories are academics, or that they're from proper families, or that they're just educated white men. The common motive of something horrible lurking behind a proper façade requires certain characters. The theme of discovering the grandness of the actual cosmos, and therefore the insignificance of man, works better if the protagonist is something of an academic.
As for Kafka, the fact that we're told relatively little about Josef K doesn't mean that Josef K doesn't matter. It's not about what we're told, but also about what we're not told. Josef K and his life is constructed to enforce Kafka's themes. I'd say Kafka is far more concerned with this than Lovecraft is.
Regardless, this probably isn't even relevant for the actual rewrite situation this spawned out of.
>>
>>25731592
It's just that I found myself much more immersed by the setting and environment rather than the specific character in Lovecraft's "mythos", though that is a different matter in his short stories. Note, we're talking about just the protagonist, IE the point of view here and the development thereof.
>>
So, in order to settle the debate of whether marefriend or fillyfriend is more popular, I wrote a script to count every instance of both those words in the 25/11/15 fimfarchive. The results are below:

marefriend count = 38,996
fillyfriend count = 5,651

number of stories with marefriend = 9,013
number of stories with fillyfriend = 1,628

Thus, we can say with high certainty that marefriend is much more popular than fillyfriend, by about a factor of 7.
>>
>>25731620
>It's just that I found myself much more immersed by the setting and environment rather than the specific character in Lovecraft's "mythos"
I don't care much for the "mytos", because I feel like it's largely something invented and enforced after Lovecraft died, and by other actors. Plus it's tied into so much current pop culture things that I largely just don't care for. I like the stories, I just normally don't like what people have done with them.

But talking about character, Lovecraft has the tendency to rarely write "normal" protagonists because it enforces his themes (a theme of human insignificance and fear of the unknown doesn't work if the protagonist is a standard pulp hero, for example), because he writes in that style that uses first person retelling of events, and because he normally just writes short works. "Protagonist" is kind of a difficult term with Lovecraft sometimes, because you'll have one character telling the story, but the story can largely be centred around the action of someone else, who ends up doing the actions we in a story normally relate with protagonists.

But it really doesn't seem right to me to say that protagonists don't matter. They're rarely developed much (I can name exceptions), but they often have some aspect that's important for the plot or theme. What I'm getting at is that all authors use protagonists as a tool to tell a story or convey a theme, and Lovecraft is exception, even if his character don't take center-stage.
>>
>>25731705
By "mythos" I don't mean the established, pop culture mythos. I mean the little world he created, the dreamland and all those who occupy it and the myriad little gods that don't give a shit about them. It's like a Dwarf Fortress world left to generate for a thousand years.

I'm saying that the protagonist isn't the base of all importance because of Čapek's War with the Newts. It's delivered entirely in the form of newspaper clippings. There is no protagonist, so how he can be important in any way? A story can be delivered without the aid of a protagonist, but one may and usually does help to get delivered. The War with the Newts is, after all, a special case.

So the idea is that it's a lovecraftian/cosmic horror fic where the ponies' inherent magic was far more powerful than anyone realized and they had most other races under some sort of spell to keep them from realizing that the ponies are corrupting the world for their own ends.

Initially, Anon woke up in Equestria and realized that things were horribly wrong, so he fled to the everfree forest and met up with Zecora and a couple others who saw through the illusion.

The reason I'm thinking about using Spike is because Anon basically acted like Spike would: hesitant to leave when he realized something was wrong, terrified and alone, fighting to reconcile his innate love for Twilight and ponykind in general with the realization that they're monsters, etc.

There is going to be a lot of dialog rewrite and given that what I currently have is pretty much a bare-bones plot summary anyways I'm not really worried about the whole "Anon with a Spike skin" problem.
>>
>>25734090

>He acted like Spike

He isn't Spike, that's the problem. You should really reconsider your character if he's so hollow that you can replace him with anyone.
>>
>>25734106
That's why I'm rewriting him. Anon's character was basically "he's scared out of his mind" and Spike is in a similar situation to him, but is also an actual character with preexisting ties to the other characters which gives me an opportunity for character growth and a better dynamic than Anon would.

>>
>>25738449
It never sounded that great to me either, but it was recommended by the author of This Game of Mine (gamer Sweetie Belle and also Button Mash, which I actually liked). But unlike TGOM, the game parts are almost completely unconnected to the rest of the story. It's something for Luna and Button to bond over and that's about it. The other 2/3 of the story is shitty political maneuvering and occasional fighting. Everyone thinks they're being super sneaky and keeping secrets from everyone else, but in fact everyone has already figured out everyone else's secrets thanks to some really outrageous leaps of logic. In the latest chapter we even get the one gryphon dude monologuing for several pages about how he actually knew everything all along and the events of the past year or so have all gone just according to keikaku.

I don't blame you for not reading it.

>little interest
That's okay. It was one of the big risks of writing a fetish story. I just hope those that are into the fetish aren't thrown off by it being 96k long.

One day, I'll finish Regent. One day...

>>25734090
In this case, using Spike's probably not a good idea. Not only has been living in Equestria since birth and been affected by the glamour spell for that long, but his deep connection with Twilight and co mean that any "wrongness" would likely be dismissed by them with reassurance, comfort, etc.

Why can't you just center it on Zecora?

>plot
I'm kind of iffy about everyone being an eldrich abomination. It's certainly unique, but it strains things for me. Having the alicorns be monsters or some limited characters would work, but every single pony? Do they go through an orientation when they're a foal about the big evil plan? If everyone's in on it, why is there conflict between the different ponies (NMM, Flim Flam, Blueblood, Sombra, etc.)? Why do they need a big evil plan when Equestria's doing pretty well and they already have the rest of the planet under a spell?
>>
>>25739723
>using Spike's probably not a good idea
Yeah, that's why I'm asking for advice. On one hand, Spike was the logical next choice, but on the other the story would probably suffer as a result of me taking the easy way out, and I think it would be a lot more difficult to write Spike well than I realize.

>Why can't you just center it on Zecora?
I initially had her in a sort of guiding/protector role. She spent her time figuring out what was going on during the period where the protagonist realized something was horribly wrong, so when he met up with her she filled him in a bit. I thought the role fit her character.
I'd be open to alternatives, but Zecora being the main character doesn't really appeal to me, especially since it's a lot harder to get inside her head than other characters that have had a bit more exposition.

>plot
I might have explained that badly. Celestia and Luna are eldritch abominations, the ponies are more like fishmen.

>Why do they need a big evil plan?
It was in their best interests to keep up the illusion because while they are powerful, they probably couldn't fend off whatever villain of the week is fighting them as well as the Griffons, Diamond Dogs, etc.
They wanted to lay low while their magic corrupted the world around them.

It's a work in progress and I haven't really worked out the finer details yet.
