As cool as it would be the neat thing about racing games is they don't need to flashy to be fun. MC64 still holds up even with the alien controller. My point is make a really simple pone racer and it could possibly get done and fun this kind of thing is way to ambitious.
>>

What the fuck happened to it? Did it get hit with a C&D? Last I heard it just dropped off the map

Yeah, but paying too much attention to the visuals is what made the game slow to develop.

I mean, they dedicated entire videos about background ponies (even an big one about Derpy) instead of the actual racing physics.

Obviously the models were easy to target as C&D worthy, but I believe that they could had at least a playable beta if they started to work in the actual physics first.
>>
>>25697649
IIRC the team behind Ponykart fell apart because the game was taking too much time to be made. Some people from their team just lost interest in ponies, some couldn't work on it anymore because they ran into financial problems and were force to find a job.
The main reason for cancelling it, however, was the fact that the creation of racing tracks requied much more time and creativity than they originally expected.

>the creation of racing tracks requied much more time and creativity than they originally expected.

The actual physics of the driving itself is also what can make or break a racing game, seriously.

An infamous example is this one right here. The visuals were awesome, but holy crap, the handling was TERRIBLE.

>IIRC the team behind Ponykart fell apart because the game was taking too much time to be made

Why the fuck is it taking forever for all these simple fan games to be made anyways? I know that game development can take over a year, but jesus christ, you'd think with all the ways it's become simpler, they would have found a way to get it done soon. They could have probably just made it open source and released a few track/cart creation tools as well
>>
IIRC the head of PonyKart was the person who made the infamous Lyra plushie of 2012 and that kind of derailed the whole project.

it takes thousands of man-hours to make a quality indie game, and still hundreds to make a decent one

no one really cares enough to do it basically
>>
>>25698385
They would have done it if they could do a patreon, but since they would have been C&D faster than the eye, then what's the point.
>>
>>25698406
Is there no way to negotiate with Hasbro?
>>
>>25698308
I don't know if thats what derailed the project, but the thingabout the guy being the person who made th lyra plushie is common knowledge. Hoppip, one of the most popular tripfags in mlpg. He talked about development, and also didcussed how to advertice the plishie with mlpg. He also got into tulpas before he quot ponies, and used to be known as a girl untila picture of him at a british mlpg brony meetip revesled that he was a fat guy.
>>
>>25698436
Nope.
Hasbro doesn't care about handling the adult fanbase in any way. They just pretend we don't exist.
And with so much porn and shit, I can't blame them.
>>
>>25698268
I used to think that too. Then I actually worked on a game. You can't imagine how much work is actually involved from an artwork, design and coding perspective. Even with simple shit, even if you have the engine and tools provided for you.

It's a lot to ask from non-professionals doing it for free.
>>
>>25698490
They should have done a mini flash version and be done with it.
>>
>>25698537
Then people wouldnt have cared. Also the point of the ptoject was to show off their skills to get a real job, they probably needed to do something challenging for the project to serve its purpose.
>>
>>25698567
Well they didn't do shit in the end, so they fucked up apparently.

>remember
Never forgot about it. Just one of the many promising games that bit the dust because the creators lost interest. And we saw what happens if the creators don't lose interest and try to finish it.
>>
>>25697914
this

>>25698268
I'll never forgive myself for not trying harder to make the track. If I worked on it more, there is a good chance at least an alpha might have been finished. The team was pretty big and once somebody got the ball rolling lots got done by the others too.

>>25698281
Hoppip got a job working on an f1 racing game, so working on a cart game in his spare time was exhausting.
>>
>>25699822
Any chance to finish the game, tripfriend?
Or it will be forever forgotten into the abyssal internet memory?
>>
>>25699841
I don't think so. There was a group porting it to UE4, but I don't know how far that ever got.
>>
>>25699868
Sucks

Probably one of the main reasons was the team was inexperienced and tried to handle something too big for them

If I recall correctly, you're the Anon that does stuff with the 3D pone models, correct?
Does the rest of the team had experiencie on games or models or ponies?

I think if they could have done something 'smaller' previously trying to do that videogame, then they could know what they were about to face; and not crashing into a wall that was creating a game, let alone a pone 3D racing game.
>>
>>25697740

C&D's scare the shit outta developers.
>>
>>25699868
Good to see you're still around man. Are the 3d threads ever coming back?
>>
>>25699913
I did the pone and EG models. I haven't kept up with the other members of the team, so I don't know what experience they have now.

>>25699997
I don't think there is enough interest to maintain them. It really depends on others.
>>
>>25700013
That's a shame. I hope you'll let us know if there's a new build of the applecart game. I offered a while back to try and help with some of the scripting, and I'm a lot less busy nowadays if you guys are still working on the AI.

Everfree outpost or whatever it's called looks like it has promise.

Only problem is there aren't any challenges to overcome. You just kind of run around, gathering resources without any kind of present danger. In minecraft you have to avoid monsters and the environment, but there's nothing like that yet in EO.

Still, it's gotten a lot farther than most projects, so there may be hope yet.

Also, wasn't there a guy making a point and click Halloween game? Something something Cello? That also looks pretty good.

I guess the main drain on motivation/hope is that you can't publicly announce your dev'ing progress without the fear of a C&D. As such people stay in their hidey holes, motivation slowly draining away because they don't have the odd person going "Hey, I like what you're doing and you should keep doing it". It also affects us too, because it seems like no one has any plans to make a pony game.
>>
Are the assets and code available fow download?
>>
>>25700326
The guy who makes Everfree that was showing us an algorithm he's working on to generate dynamic dungeons, so who knows
>>
>>25700379
Exploring them will for sure be awesome, but I don't think the concept of health has been added yet. Or at least, you can't really fail at something, which keeps the tension low.

I get this isn't an E-"sport" or whatever, but you can see how the lack of tension or challenge could detract from the game's overall fun.
>>
We're lucky to be alive, we're lucky to be breathing, and you expect us to do more than that? You're insane.

You

I've seen you around a lot lately

Can you say a bit more about your journalistic background? Because you seem to pop up in random places, especially on 4chan, and while that's part of the fandom it's not really the most relevant stuff.

Most of all, I think you may actually have more luck contacting the more well-known people directly, especially those who run media sites. HN staff will be able to talk about most things concerning 4chan, Seth & team will be able to talk about pretty much anything you'd probably want to know, and they all probably have more time for this than random Anons on 4chan.

I obviously don't know if you've been going around other sites, and doing field research is great, but I hope you're covering all your bases.

>>
So what exactly caused the poor optimization for the Kart game? Shitty programmers? Crappy language?
>>
It seems clear to me that every game in the fandom should be open source. Lord knows this place has a ton of coders and computer-literate folks in it. We could all help each other out, and then shit like this wouldn't happen.
>>
>>25715157
Sure, but where are you going to host the codebase? Github? Uploading stuff that encroaches on intellectual property on a public page gets risky.
>>
>>25715803
Maybe distance it from MLP as much as you can while still making it a pony game (As in have ocs and shit)? Or just take an open source engine and make a pony game out of it.
>>
>>25715138
Wasn't it made in Unity? If it was that'd probably be why.

It's not like you can't make unity smooth, I just think it's easy to put too many assets onto a stage and create lag.
>>
>>25715157
See, I used to believe that, but then I realized if it were true, more pony games would exist.

While most people in the fandom are more tech literate than average chums, average fandom goers don't know enough when it comes to coding. A bit, but not the annoying shit that's needed for making a game with pathfinding or some such feature.
>>
>>25697470
But WHY?

They're ponies. They should have Sky Racing Pegasi game, or Seapony underwater racing, or just Earth Pony running of the leaves racing.....

Mario Kart rip off? I think they quit working on this because it's stupid.
>>
>>25715994
Or Unicorn magical wormhole portal racing. Competition breeds skill and experience.
>>
>>25715994
Because Kart games are fun and more appealing than a running pony game. Sonic R proved this back in the fucking 90s.
>>
>>25698065
Holy shit you weren't fucking joking:
