I'm making a game about ponies getting lost in the woods.

http://play.everfree-outpost.com/

How to play:
>Use arrow keys to move, hold Shift to run
>Press Enter to type in the chat
>Press A to interact with objects such as trees, rocks, and anvils
>Press E to open inventory and assign items to the hotbar with 1-9. Press D in game to use the currently selected item.
>Use an anvil to craft items from raw materials. There is an anvil at spawn for getting started.
>Type /help to see a list of chat commands. Use /spawn if you get stuck.

The eventual goal is for this to play sort of like a cross between Minecraft and Golden Sun. It will be based partly on crafting and building things to expand the town, and partly on exploring the forest and solving Golden Sun-style puzzle-based dungeons for rare items and crafting materials.

This week:
> New tree graphics!
> Internal changes to support structures with multiple parts
> The various House Wall items have been replaced with separate Brick Wall and Interior Wall variants

Will you be able to go back to ponyville4 once you end the game? is there even gonna be an ending or this gonna be like a typical mmo?

I have no idea how large the world really is and now I am lost, Mini map might help if building and expanding a town is the goal.

Also noticed a cut away in caves, this is good, but this happens each and every time I am under a tree, this is bad.

Also wanted to add, A mouse over might be helpful for new players and old as it will give information to what things are. IE crafting items, a mouse over will tell you that you need wood or stone, etc. The mouse over may also help with "abilities" as I have not a clue what mine is.

>>25686915
>Also noticed a cut away in caves, this is good, but this happens each and every time I am under a tree, this is bad.
Yeah, I have thought a bit on ways to improve that system in general, but it was always mostly okay in the past, so I didn't bother. Now that it's started annoying people, I'll try to fix it up a little for next weekend.

>>25686991
>A mouse over might be helpful for new players and old as it will give information to what things are.
Yeah, the big downside of the new inventory system right now is that you can't see the names of any of the items. I am planning to add some mouseover info like that relatively soon. (I'm working on adding locked doors that only open if you have a specific key, and one of the requirements there is a way to distinguish "Key to Anon's House" from any other keys you might have in your inventory.)

>>25688713
>>25689227
>I might contribute.
That would be great!

What sorts of things would you be interested in working on? Here's an overview of the different components, to give you an idea of what sort of things you might need to know/learn:
- The server is written in Rust, and uses Lua for scripting (to define item/ability effects and such).
- The client is written in Javascript, using WebGL for all the graphics (so changes to rendering may require some knowledge of GLSL shaders).
- Data definitions (for items, structures, etc) are set up using Python.
If you just want to add some new items, you can probably get by with a bit of Python and/or Lua. There's also a "modding build" set up for this purpose, so you don't have to mess around with setting up the whole build environment.

Yeah I noticed the three languages on the github
I done Java, Javascript and Python before. Still trying to get around Lua. And good to know what the set up is for the shaders. Do you use surfaces as well as shaders?

And when it comes to games, I'm a polymath, count on me for anything related. I am not able to dedicate full time to this project, as I have a few of my own, yes games, but I will aid you any way I can for the time being.

Also I'm the same one that found all the little bugs, I been bug hunting and taking notes for ya. Hope you don't mind. But now I know it OS I know I can help, I just don't know how to test it from there.

Also noted in some instances of the dungeons there are times that a door will be inaccessible to the cave>outside or inside the dungeon itself a door will have access around it.

As seen in the pic. This is somewhat rare occurrence but still should be noted .

Another suggestion to OP >>25669207

Player placed items I noticed such as a road can be taken away as easy as placed using A and D. This is problem matic for accidentals such as when typing a message and not pressing enter prior.

It should be made that certain items such as a torch can be picked up by "hoof" While other items like road requires a pickaxe and a fence an axe. This would prevent accidental removal unless the tool is in "hoof"

>What sorts of things would you be interested in working on?
Two things like the auth system and more colors. Right now, you can't 'login' as the same character without manually copying localstorage variables. A password system that uses the secret to store the password (encrypted) should require only clientside changes.

I'll need to research a little on how colors are done. It looks like it's saved serverside (logging into two sessions saved appearance and location).

Also maybe adding genitals.
>>
>>25693404
maybe adding genitals
good luck with that, it's a no-no in OP's book
>>
>>25690702
>Do you use surfaces as well as shaders?
Not sure what you mean by "surfaces". The structures do have actual 3D geometry, though it's pretty simple. If you look at data/lib/models.py you can see some of the code for producing those.

>some instances of the dungeons there are times that a door will be inaccessible to the cave>outside
OK, I haven't seen this happen before. Are you sure it's fully inaccessible, and not just connected to the other end of the dungeon through some long and twisted path?

>or inside the dungeon itself a door will have access around it.
Yeah, I need to look into that. There's logic to force the existence of walls where necessary to prevent that from happening, but it seems not to work.

Have you seen this happen with gem doors, or only with key doors?

>>25691534
Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to look at that and see what happens.

>>25693404
>auth system
Great! I've been thinking about adding a more permanent account system of some kind, so that certain accounts can be given permanent superuser status that persists across restarts. I think this would make life easier for the MLPG server, where right now after a server upgrade anyone who needs superuser has to be logged on at the same time as the admin so he can grant them access.

When I have more time I'll post some more details on the code and on setting up the build environment.

>more colors
>looks like it's saved serverside
The colors are indeed saved serverside. They're attached to the Entity (character) object as part of the "appearance" field. There's a file under "doc" describing the format of that field.

Right now "appearance" is 32 bits and every bit is in use, so it will likely need to be extended one way or another.

One feature of the current system is that there aren't any really garish/ugly color schemes. It would be nice to design the new color system to preserve that, if possible. LoE might have a system for this but I haven't looked to find out.

Step 1 is to set up a Linux VM, if you don't have Linux installed already. I use Debian but Ubuntu should also work and definitely has more tutorials and such available for it.

After that, you need to install a bunch of Rust-related stuff to build the server. I will round up all the binaries you need so you have something easy to install. If you'd rather build from source, use git to clone the Rust repo, check out the specific revision listed in the Everfree Outpost README.md, and run `./configure && make`.

You also need some software from the normal repos. Get `build-essential`, `ninja`, and the packages listed in the README (from `python3` on down). (Ninja should be in the readme too but I apparently forgot to add it.)

I'll upload those binaries in a bit, once I figure out what exactly I need to include.

was either 3 to 4 weeks after first thread. I am sure he played with us.
Hell, we even had Tiarawhy for awhile playing. He/She? was on at the same time he/she was doing a thread about cloptopia. When it was first released I think.

Here's the rest on that build environment.

Rust binaries and libraries (for 64-bit Linux): http://play.everfree-outpost.com/outpost-build-tools-2015-12-07.tar.xz
Current Everfree Outpost build: http://play.everfree-outpost.com/outpost-linux-2015-12-05c.tar.xz

Unpack both of those somewhere, and clone the everfree-outpost repo from github. Then in the everfree-outpost directory, run the configure script:
./configure --debug --use-prebuilt=www --prebuilt-dir=../outpost-linux-2015-12-05c --rust-extra-libdir=../outpost-build-tools-2015-12-07/extra-libs --force
And build by running `ninja`.

This should be enough to build the server. Once it's built, open two different terminals in the everfree-outpost/dist/ directory. Run `python3 -m http.server 8889` in one (to get an HTTP server to serve up the client to a web browser) and run `bin/run_server.sh` in the other (to run the Everfree Outpost game server). Then point a web browser to http://localhost:8889/www/client.html and you should get the usual game.

To make yourself a superuser on your server, join the game and then run `echo 'w:get_client(0):extra().superuser = true' | socat - unix:dist/repl`. (Install `socat` from your package manager first.) Afterward, you can use /help in-game to see the new superuser commands.

If you later want to build the client code, you'll need to also install the emscripten-fastcomp and rust-emscripten-passes versions listed in the README, and change the ./configure command by removing --use-prebuilt, --prebuilt-dir, and --force, and adding --emscripten-fastcomp-prefix, --emscripten-passes-prefix, --rust-home, and --bitflags-home. See `./configure --help` for more info.

I know this is a pain but I'll be happy to help if you run into any trouble. Let me know in the thread or by email ([email protected]).

This is more of a technical question, but why did you split up the game into so many different languages?

Why not just one or two?
>>
>>25697764
Thanks, OP. I'll set it up and ask if anything comes up.

I have kinda been wanting to contribute for awhile, but I have been kinda been busy, and my code may be of dubious quality, and I currently only really know C++. I have looked over the code abit though, it looks pretty nice. I guess I'll let you know if I feel I maybe able to do something though.
>>
>>25702433
C++ is object oriented code correct? Just curious.
>>
>>25701686
Indeed

Fucking sprites are so damn difficult when you fuck with the perspective

The idea in this picture is to make a stealth suit, but i'll add the metal jaw for personal use (mods). I'll make swords on the future, that's just an example
>>
D-does this game need music? I could do a song or two.
>>
>>25702433
Once you program in a low level (relatively) language like C++ and a higher level one (Ruby, Python, JS, etc), then you can write code in any language. I've never touched Rust before, and I personally think this game is a good incentive/tutorial to learn it.
>>
>>25703463
C++ has object oriented features like classes and inheritance, so yes. However you don't strictly need to use such things if you don't want to, you can just have standalone functions as well.
>>25703482
That's looking pretty cool, good job!

Sorry if you lost builds but that is expected when a game updates as frequent as this one. If I was able to carry stuff over to new versions I would but it just seems to cause issues.

Thanks everyone for playing this week!

The everfree-outpost.com server will be back next weekend at the same time. I will try to get the roof cutaway system to stop going crazy around trees, and continue work on the current main project of adding lockable doors for houses.

Until then, you can play on the outpost.mlpg.co server: >>25702410

So who actually knows how to create mods for this?

Also are there any AS 1,2,3 Flash devs in here who know how to use a flash decompiler?

Even though it will be funny. Chances are it wont happen since there no butt tattoos to complain about. I think Mircrosoft will loose their shit before hasbro due to a minecraft rippoff. Or should we be worried about Terriaria ?
