just because you learned something from the best doesn't mean you learned and practiced every field equally, it seems like combat magic would realistically be the introverted and scholarly twilight's shortcoming, even if she has a lot of potential and knows the theory she probably never really bothered to practice it.

Becoming an Alicorn doesn't give you an instant power upgrade.
When a pony ascends to Alicorn they gain the ability to use Alicorn magic, which is significantly more powerful than Unicorn magic, however it takes time and effort to learn how to use this magic. At the moment it is tough for Twilight to access her Alicorn magic at all and she is far from mastering it.
Give her a few decades, once she masters her new powers she'll be a force to be reckoned with but for now she's stuck with her normal Unicorn magic which is exceptional but only equal to other exceptional Unicorns.
