Can blender models be sliced for a 3d printer? I might try printing something sometime if that's the case.

This pastebin uses archive.moe links, it's outdated.

How do beginners learn the best practices and techniques? Trial by fire and error, or is there someplace that everyone just happens to miss?

Depends how much free time you have.

If you had nothing to do for a week, you'd learn enough to make decent low poly assets like pic related (assuming you can make textures).

After another week you'd probably be up to speed regarding rigging, animating, and probably effects made in blender.

Sculpting isn't super hard to learn, but sculpting a good looking asset does take time.

Yup. there is a addon in blender which helps you with exporting it and checking a model for possible difficulties for the printer.

>>25636967
not very fast, it is pretty complex. Do some tutorials, mess around alot, don't give up.

good for beginners; after you learned the very basics!

i also went back to my old models and already fixed some stupid mistakes, so now it should deform better

I'd say you've done good on everything but the head. It just looks...
>>
>>25645059
The body came out pretty well, but holy shit that head. It looks too inflated and unnatural.

Also the ears probably don't need that much definition, seeing as everything else is sort of cartoon-ishly smoothed out.
>>
>>25645059
>>25645052
Download link pls?

Btw you gave me an idea. We have plenty of pony bodoes but never the correct head. Or even hair assets.

To anyone else who makes a pony I suggest you work on the head/face features, it's the hardest part.

Also we could use a Manticore model.
Along with code for AI, combat, animation for said combat.
>>
>>25646933
Use in where? Do you have any idea of just how big a leap is from modeling pone, to making pone game?

Oh, hey, is the 3D general finally going to make a comeback?

Anyway, I'm trying to teach myself Blender because I want to help out with aesthetics for the Cup. I've been following this e-book so far: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro

But as I don't see it mentioned in the pastebin, I'm suddenly a bit concerned. Is this a good, fairly complete resource? Has anyone else learned from it?

Good deformations for such an extreme pose. Probably much better then what my models could do.

Well, it's reassuring that the man himself once used the book I'm working from.

I have to say though, when I come across a module that hasn't been updated in a long time, it can be pretty amazing how much the UI has changed in only a few subversions.

Anyway, I don't have anything fun and pony related to share yet, so here's a very plain jeep model I farted out following the tutorial in the ebook. I'm participating!
>>
>>25651320
I feel like this would look a lot better if you didn't smooth the edges.
>>
>>25651337
Um, but I didn't smooth the edges. Everything on the jeep body is a sharp corner except for the bevel I put on the front of the hood.

Yeah, the UI moves around a reasonable bit, though it has stabilized over the past couple years.
One good source starting out is BlenderGuru. I learned the most from that. In particular the instructor is great at still renders. If you want to learn more about animation and rigging, blender cookie is the best. Their older content was great for being free at least, though I don't know how much of it will still be available.

I haven't been up to very much pony because I've been busy with homework, but I have been chipping away at >pic related for the last couple weeks.
