Twilight's friends have at least three chances to become really important and involved in the "big events" stories. It's really important to me because I believe that at this point there's absolutely no reason to deny them their rightful place and respect in the show. I hate wasted potential and honestly more Twilight shit has become boring. Seems like the only reason for it is Meghan McCarthy's favoritism.

I feel like that scene was originally supposed to involve Sunset Shimmer as her childhood friend, since we know Sunset was Celestia's old student, and would tie in better to the 'went off to Canterlot and I never heard from him again', thing, as that's exactly what Twilight did to Moondancer. Also helps justify the Glimmer <--> Shimmer thing. I'm guessing for one reason or another they decided to not to mention Sunset, but were too lazy to make a new backstory for Glimmer that actually justifies her actions

We know that Unicorns with astronomical names (Trixie Lulamoon, Moondancer, Star Swirl, etc) tend to be talented in magic. That has been clear for years now,
We also know that when the writers want to include characters that mirror or appear as "alternatives" to Twilight, they get "identical" names. Sunset made that obvious years ago too.
It's not about alicornhood, at least not primarily. It's a narrative tool where the writers want to further express the similarity between the new character and the original character they're mirroring. It has everything to do with their concept at introduction, and nothing to do with a larger "end plan".
It's just a tool, a trick.
But we've had this thread before. None of this is new information.
