The transition from a student to a teacher might feel odd to Twilight Sparkle, but it's something that was likely always in the cards for her in some form or another. the only thing we really know is that Glimmer was sent back as well whenever Twalit was sent back. I don't remember it being specifically stated that sue comes back to a time before Twalot but it is the only thing that majes sense since glimmer is already waiting when Twalot cones back.
As for where Glimmer is when Twalot is in the future, i can only see two answers that make time sense.
Either she follows the entire timeline back to the present and is pulled back when Twalot goes back, but that doesn't agree with Glimmer's ignorance of the futures.
Or Glimmer is sent instantly when Twalot is sent to the future. (Remember we're dealing with time travel so Glimmer doesn't actually need to be or spend time anywhere at all in any parallell of anything when Twalot is in the future. It is free to be experienced as an instant for her)
The only problem i see with that is the fact that we don't see Glimmer get sent anywhere when Twalot is.
Glimmer spending 10 minutes in a time bubble while Twilat spends 10 minutes in the future doesn't really make any time sense since different points on the same timeline do not happen in parallell.

From what the show explained the spell simply sent Starlight back to the event that she created.
She possibly could have fucked it up and the spell erased her memories of the events leading to Twilight returning to the past.
Starlight is smart, and magically powerful as hell, but she is prone to loosing herself in rage, and that could have lead to a tiny flaw in the spell.

It would make the most sense from the "Glimmer has no idea what she is causing" perspective. But I highly doubt that she would trap herself in the past with no way to get back to her real time line, so it must be something else.
On the other hand, she was obviously also not pulled back into the present, because then she would have appeared close to the map, too, since that was the place at which all of them started the travel.
One way how that fits all together might be that the spell tried to pull Glimmer back to the present, but something happened to her AU ego before that point, leading to her not existing in that time line anymore and thus getting lost somewhere along the time tunnel.I am glad they made no attempts to lay down the rules for time travel because it is way too easy to forget something and break your own rules. At least if you never stated them they cannot be broken, either.

At least its missions have served no greater purpose so far so I don't think it's over yet.

I attribute it to being a cartoon with a set time limit. As a reactionary sort of thing I didn't like it at first. Her not trying to find her lost friend, doing all this just to get back at Twilight, etc. Really though Glimmer losing her friend just made her hate that cutiemarks can be a negative thing in some cases. This made her go a bit nutty and made the equality village. Twilight tearing that down, even though for good reason, is what hurt Glimmer the most.
Seeing the world being nothing but a barren waste made her start to think. Yeah it all boils down to friendship and redeeming Glimmer, but with a show name like Friendship is Magic I'd be disappointed if they didn't at least try to make peace with some villains. They still blew the fuck out of Tirek, Chrysalis, and literally Sombra.
I think it would have been better to not touch on why Glimmer started on her equality ideology and instead saved it for a later episode. Twilight destroying her town and the barren waste timeline would be enough for the whole ordeal.

Yeah it felt like either they should have touched on her ideology and why she was like that a lot more, or not at all. Just going "oh yeah this friend I was real close to left" just made it seem really dumb at first. They needed more time to delve into her going for this ideology to make it seem less stupid or petty.
In the end it is a cartoon so I tend to ask myself when is simple better over going too deeply into one thing. I'm no professional so I can't really say. I can merely tell when something feels off or could possibly be done better. Looking back on it I can get an idea in my head of how things went and Glimmers spiral into Equality so I don't hate it nearly as much.
It's weird. This finale felt less urgent somehow than season fours. Even though the world could end due to any number of the major villains they took care of. I guess the antics during the Rainboom race could be the cause. Dash a cute lil filly.

The talk her and Luna had during Slice of Life was the most interaction they've had in five fucking seasons. I love the show but this really pisses me off. Celesta was crying and overjoyed that her sister had finally come back after 1000 years. Fucking let them interact god dammit. Make up for lost time. Maybe touch on any possible emotional baggage Celestia has over what happened.
Granted I'd want Celestia to have her own episode by herself before this, but that should have happened in like season fucking two. We don't know jack shit about Celestia.
