So I was wondering about you multilinguists.
Do any of you watch MLP in your language exclusively, or do you watch the superior english version only? or do you guys just not really care which version you watch?

Just a small topic for whatever

There is no such thing as other languages, there is only the human language called English, then there is the oral defecation of all other tounges.

I watch the superior english version ofcourse.
The persian dub is horribly laughable.
All ponies are voiced by 6-12 year olds. Or at least sound like they are.
>>

I only download the English version via torrents.
Sometimes I use my set top box to see what it's like on different channels.
There was a time that I was able to watch it on polish canal + sister channels.

id imagine translations would be hard beacause of finnish cases and such

so im assuming no effort at all in the acting.
I thought i remembered people saying how the latino spanish was the best one outside english?

>>25631127
the persian dub im guessing might sound bad because of budget and all that jazz. mainly because not a whole lot of people watch mlp in iran. and persian is fairly rare to hear in the western world if anything
>>
>>25631391
Well I am very exigent.
So for me it has to be 99.9% exact or go away.
Supposedly it got fixed in later seasons, but I still don't like it much.
It is ok if the target audience wants to watch it and they don't know english to watch the original I guess.
>>
>>25631391
>the persian dub im guessing might sound bad because of budget and all that jazz.
Usually the government helps with dubbing the product but in this case , Iran never airs MLP.
On the other hand there are some channels that dub the show and air it but they completely lack dubbing skills and they have like 3 or 4 people so yeah it's shit.
If the governments' dub team do it , it would be amazingly good , they have been in this businessf for 30 years.

I watch in English and Arabic. I love both.

The English version is the best one and nothing can really top it, but I do enjoy the other dubs quite a bit. Though, that depends on which one. Some are decent, and others are pure shit.
>>
>>25631069
With the German dub, some of the words are changed a bit to get a better meaning. Like for example, the EQG3 song where Twilight sings, "I know there is more that's out there."

In German, it can be translated as, "There is more still out there,"

They're fairly minor, but it's not quite a direct translation over from English, if that's what you're asking.
>>
>>25632442
How is the german dub to you? like quality wise. voice acting sounds alright to me as far as i can tell.
>>

>>
>>25630994
I'm Dutch, I watch MLP in English because the Dutch dub is beyond terrible, and because I prefer watching shows in their original language (except for shows I watched in my childhood and remember in Dutch).
>>
>>25632495
The quality of the voices are okay for the most part.
Julia Meyner does a good job with Twilight, and Pinkie's voice is okay but can get a little grating, especially when she starts screaming or shouting. However, Fluttershy's speaking voice is extremely irritating for me to hear, because whoever does her voice does so in this falsetto-whisper type of voice. Having said that, when that VA actually uses her voice for singing, then it sounds good.

Here is a good example. Listen to the difference between her speaking and singing. I'm not certain if it's the same VA, but if it is she does a better job singing than speaking.

While both german and english are my native languages, I watch the english original only since the german "translation" is pure shit and every pony speaks without any accent or dialect. Just imagine both Rarity and Applejack speaking the same bland way, not to mention Luna.

One of the worst examples is the part where "Cadance" sings "No, I do not love the groom in my hearth there is no room". In german, it was raped to "This guy leaves me cold as ice, I don't like him at all", with the last part being a german phrase that is only used by small, angry kids ("Ich habe ihn garnicht lieb").

Having a BA in Japanology, I can verify that the japanese translation is actially very good - especially the smile song is very well translated.
>>

Though German isn't my mother language, I did notice the complete lack of accents for every single one of them. If I recall from seeing some of the Galacon panel videos, the German VA's are forced to remove their accents when they do their work, that is not done by choice. When Julia speaks sometimes outside of recording, it's in a Berlinerisch accent.

While in my case, I purposefully sought out the German dub, in order to help me learn the language, and I gained quite a lot from it. But, as the others have said, the quality of the voices and the translations can use a bit of work. However, that might be due to the fact that German is a very direct language, and you can't easily flower your words like you can in English. Sure, there may be slang now and again, but it just doesn't quite add up.

Having said all this, and though there's more to follow: in comparison with some other dubs I've come across, German isn't all that bad. You have not experienced ear-rape until you hear the Ukrainian and Romanian versions. The former of which does not even sing the songs, rather plays the English version in the background on a low volume, while some lady speaks - not sings, but speaks in that language over the partially muted English song. And this is not a new thing, they have been practicing this since season 1, up until I believe season 4. They, like the Germans, lag behind a year on their dub whilst others such as Castillan, French, and Italian get theirs out fairly quickly. Those three are midway through season 5, as a comparison.

I'm also kind of okay in French, or at least I used to be.

I've watched half an episode in Norwegian on television, found that to be pretty shitty, and never tried any other dubs. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't watch it in English, seeing as there's no language barrier for me.

Yeah, it's so bad I'm unable to take it seriously. It becomes kind of laughable though.
The translations are kind of stupid. Some words and names are obviously not translated, and become really jarring in the middle of the otherwise Norwegian dialogue. And the words that are translated (fucking jordponni) sound so bad.

But it's always like this. The Norwegian dub is pretty much always shit.
