The real question is, Why are Flim and Flam operating the machine themselves?
If they really control this timeline, wouldn't they have other ponies do it? We know they look for schemes to get rich quick, and they prefer to win others over with marketing rather than merit. Operating all those factories and the tree remover besides seems like real work.
More questions about Flim and Flam: Do they enjoy cheating people? With the ability to create machines like the SSCS 6000, how have they not been able to make a fortune honestly? Also, how do they make money with all the trees cut down? Their main product is apple cider. You can't make cider without apple trees.
I doubt Flim and Flam actually run the country in this one, because they are still doing the work themselves. Celestia, for example, rarely does anything herself. We are only given the scene in ponyville.
