What if the next gen is very similar to the current gen but with different characters (but still set in the same world)? Hasbro are unlikely to ditch the whole of G4 due to how successful it has turned out to be. They will most likely try to make G5 as similar as possible while still refreshing the brand and allowing them to make new toys for all the new characters.

It may have outlasted the shows, but the actual G1 toyline lasted something like 10 years or so. Even the much less successful G3 line lasted 7 years or so. As soon as it shows signs of growing stale, they will revamp the whole thing to get the little girls to but their ponies again. It is inevitable.

They've changed the mold style every few years. The only generation that lasted more than 7 was G2 and that was only because it was an European-exclusive line for so long that they had no reason to bring it here for a while, which lead to the entire line being artificially extended when it did release worldwide.
All in all, Movie comes out 2017, that would be 7 to 8 years of FIM product. That's around the time you can expect all this to die down.
