The ending was nearly perfect.
After mediocre "well, I'm sorry" speech, he tries to rebuilt the statue. He keeps failing, as the gems keeps falling, yet he tries to raise it.
I really loved that part. It portrays his clumsiness along with his true intentions.
Even better, because everyone could witness Spike's personality, not hidden behind his misfortune.

I actually didn't mind spike for the first 3 seasons despite almost all his episodes being utter trash, but there is no hope for him now. I hope Rarity ends up finding another love interest and Spike fucks off and kills himself

Season 4 had some good episodes too.
I think problems with many of his episodes are overstated. Like out of all his episodes in the first three season only OWTEW and Spike At Your Service has major problems with them for me.
And with the former, when I first watched it, I thought it was fine and enjoyed repeated viewings. The complain about the owl felt really overblown. And it wasn't until later that I saw the flaw in how it limited Spike's character to acting more petty and less self assured than he had been before.
SAYS is horrible to Spike's built character and suggests he needs live like a slave to be functional, having no life even on his day off. So it was weird to see so many focus on his cleaning ability as a complain instead the bigger problem. Still the episode has a hilarious second half with all the cast and gives Spike interaction with another character that isn't Rarity and Twilight for a whole episode and builds upon that bond. Kind of sad that no episode to date has match that.

Gonna have to agree that the hate for Spike episodes is overblown. In my opinion, only SAYS (for the reasons you stated) and Princess Spike are let downs. SAYS had redeeming points though.
