I mean technically speaking without the rainboom there'd be no Elements of Harmony to fight Nightmare Moon, yet we get worlds where she's been defeated (hell, in the Discord reality we even see fucking Luna) somehow, most of them actually by the looks of it.
Kind of feels like it should have been a progressional singular timeline instead of several alternate realities, start with NMM, then later show how NMM came in contact with Discord, then how both of them dealt with the Changlings, and so on and so on until Equestria just became one giant ass clusterfuck or the windy desert world because shit just got so out of hand and everyone glassed each other. At least that would have made sense.

In each timeline, a single villain eventually triumphs over the rest due to circumstance, circumstances which are changed because such a significant event is affected..
Maybe in the Changeling timeline, Chrysalis finds the EoH and uses changeling magic to mimic whats needed to activate them. Thus she can rid herself of the opposing powers.
In another timeline, Discord is freed and takes over, overthrowing NMM and defeating Sombra. In every other timeline he stays a statue.
In the timeline NMM exists, there is nothing to indicate she isn't fighting the crystal empire at the time. We were only there for a few minutes.
Tirek gets out only sometimes. Other times he stays in Tartarus.

My assumption was based on two pieces of evidence in the show.
Sombra timeline, Celestia is still around and in charge. NMM can't exist there or has been defeated in some shape or form.
Discord timeline: Celestia and LUNA are being puppetted around.
Any other timeline is completely up for grabs. But in those two specific timelines, Celestia still being around means NMM didn't win.

mathematically such small events on a massive world scale don't make much sense. For example, calculate out the probability of green aliens coming from mars because instead of getting shot this morning, you got hung. My guess is that without the Rainboom we got a substandard main 6 like some random assortment of the main timelines Main 6 and some pleb tier bearers of harmony.
In the first alt time line we had Sombra which kinda make sense cause Spike was the one that actually saved the day in that episode so even with pleb main 6 NMM, Discord, and Chrysalis were defeated but without Spike Sombra was free to start his war.
After that it just kinda goes all over on which villain won but thats my theory anyway

It was an altered version of the spell, powerful enough to explore the other world model of time travel. It's About Time layed the groundwork that you can't change history, but using the other world theory you don't change history itself you just change the timeline to one that accommodates for that change leaving the original world in tact. The only real threat in this episode isn't Starlight 'changing history', it's Twilight being trapped in different timelines.
