To be honest, it was a 5 minute little story. Most of the screentime was spent on the alternate timelines. Twilight's speech to Starlight was the extent of the character arc and plot development.

It was better than Season 4, by virtue of having fewer bad episodes and a lot of pretty good ones. Both the Season opener and finale were better than the S4 opener and finale. Crusaders of the Lost Mark was amazing. Amending Fences was great. Griffinstone was great. Sure, there were some average episodes as well, but even the average episodes were mostly better than what we saw in S4.
As such, since I used to consider S4 the best season, S5 is now the new best season.

It is certainly an improvement over the last 2 seasons.With actual character moments in the good episodes, and alot less being resolved by Twilight and her magic ex machina. Episodes like amending fences and crusaders of the lost mark were good, but they still show case the series biggest flaw, rushed climax's.

S5 for me was a strange dichotomy.
There were some episodes where the storytelling and animation was jumping all over the place, digging itself storytelling holes and trying to zoom past with flashy enough graphics that people would ignore the glaring plot holes.
Then there's the other half of the season where the storytelling and episodes are too comfy and were extraordinarily predictable start to finish.
It was higher in production quality than other seasons. Sadly, this is the first season where I watched the last few episodes for completeness and not out of interest in the show.
On the plus side, it's bad episodes weren't glaringly atrocious like some of the earlier season ones.
