The cute thing is that one of the few things that could ever provoke a condemning, negative attitude from these characters is the defeatist mentality of the kids who gave up on them.

Well Applejack, it has never died. Just gotten incredibly weak. My magic is different to your magic. I get mine from emotions, and as long as i feel even the tiniest bit of it, I live. But even I suffer consequences of it being weak. Sadness and depression were frequent, but I held strong. You never lose your magic, even if you didn't have any to begin with. The real magic is knowing that you are happy in your life, and that as long as you have something to live for, you will keep it. I loved her, but since she is no longer with us, I have to live to keep her memory alive.
Magic is not only friendship, it can mean much more.

When S3 started. I wasn't expecting them to ever top A Canterlot Wedding, but I also wasn't expecting the writing to take such a nosedive. The episodes felt rushed and choppy, and Pinkie Pie went from adorably annoying to unbearable.
There were also the pictures of Twilight with wings, snapped at some convention... so that was always looming overhead. Some folks dismissed it as simply rumors -- the same folks probably did likewise with Equestria Girls -- but I knew better. I would've been more acceptant of it if the episode was executed better. But her ascension to princess-hood has, thus far, been completely pointless.
So yeah.

Honestly, I've been looking for a way to express my lament for this as well, and you hit the nail on the head.
But I think the worst part of it is when social anxiety comes into the plot-lines. Faust intended this to be an adventure show, and it ended up being this series of social dramas.
I can't even watch it anymore. Honestly, I didn't mind the idea of Twilicorn. But in all honesty, it bothers me more and more. When your characters ascend to godhood, they have nothing to gain, and everything to lose- reputations, friendships, all that.
Make New Friends but Keep Discord was probably where the magic died for me- it was so badly written.
The setting: a social party.
The plot: social drama.
The lesson: social maturity. Is this what they're trying to teach? shouldn't these ponies' lives be more of a fable/parable than jealousy at a party?
I couldn't even watch Princess Spike. Watching some kid get in more social trouble and humiliating himself was gonna make me vomit.
