My Mom got into an accident once. Some car barreled down the road and slammed into her door. She wasn't wearing a seat belt though, so when the car started to flip, she was thrown out of the seat and landed in the foot well of the passenger side. The drivers side of the car looked like a crushed tin can. If she'd been wearing a seat belt all those years ago, she'd be dead. Seat belts are only useful if your accident involves forward motion. They're really only good for keeping your head from going through a windshield. After that? They're useless at best, lethal at worst.

Of course seat belts help you. They keep you from flying forward and smashing your head through the windshield. What else are they going to do though? Anyone who's ever fallen asleep while buckled in knows they don't stop you from going side to side, so if you get in a side on accident, your head if going through the window. As the other Anons have pointed out, if you're unlucky enough to be on the same side that's getting hit, you're going to be crushed. Nobody is refuting how useful seat belts are. They're just saying seat belts aren't the absolute surefire way to keep yourself safe. Shit happens, Anon. Putting all your faith in one thing is a horrible idea, because if that one thing fails you, you're shit out of luck.
