Twilight grew up thinking of Cadance as a role model, and Celestia as the pinnacle of ponykind. I doubt she daily dreamt of ascending like Cadance, but I believe she was overjoyed and humbled to have been deemed worthy by the universe.

The end game was still to have Twilight be a Princess eventually, presumably whenever they needed an emergency boost to princess sales, and another two princess sisters might confuse viewers, so they decided to take Cadance's husband and make Twilight a previously unknown brother who was the most important thing in her life up until six months ago and she just forgot to mention to any of her friends because she was having so much fun getting ready for the Grand Galloping Gala, and she didn't bother to visit him any of the times she happened to be in Canterlot, but they have all this history together and its really emotional and shit, and there's an evil queen and she's powrful, but not stronger than love! lololololololol
