/mlp/ is different now. We exist in a General culture, where content creators and a good number of anons remain mostly contained with them. Its always amusing to hear of Anons bitching and moaning about how porn would ruin show discussion when its already non-existant beyond the first few days of an episode or rewatches during hiatus. Its all swept under the generals or AiE writeprompt threads anyway.
The board still has something of worth to many, but its definitely not what it used to be. Times changed, as have the crowds and culture to a degree.
/mlp/ may not have been "any good" back then, but at least we weren't what we are now.

As for /trash/, I've got mixed feelings about it. Pony is able to be posted there, even nsfw pony...but most anons are still locked to their generals here. The board is in decline for a lot of reasons, the foremost of which is that we never would have had an /mlp/ board if moot and his mods weren't fucking incapable of managing people. The reason we got the board wasn't because MLP is so popular, but because it was too popular to arbitrarily ban without causing an uproar. Imagine if moot were still here and he started banning Undertale threads because "furry" or something, and Undertale proved too popular to squash like that. Pretty soon you'd have these retarded camps about the whole thing and moot would make /ut/ so that his mods can still win even if they've lost.
So for starters there's no worthwhile official content between seasons and the board runs lean over those periods.
The second thing that happened were some very public C&D orders, such as those sent to Jan and Mane6. Around the same time, pony was uploaded to Content ID and a bunch of pony fan content that relied on grabs from the show got nailed. Hasbro didn't just seize revenue at first - it was a global block on that content that actually destroyed some popular channels and eliminated those creators from the fandom. All that really spooked people, and I remember a few artists making commentary about it in their comics or works, implying there was a real worry about who'd be next.
Next came season three, which dropped Twilicorn on us. The show has had ups and downs since then, but we never really got back on track to the awe, wonder, and sheer romanticism of the show. Twilight's ascension to godhood is STILL hopelessly awkward even as we enter season five, because Princess Twilight never made sense and has no grounding. She's the princess of friendship, but her kingdom ends at her front yard.
Then the characters have been flanderized, coming to resemble their stereotypes much more than they used to.
