There isn't much more to it. Soviets realized that they didn't really remove jerry infantry as fast as they wanted to so they slapped a bunch if MGs on a plane in the hopes of removing more.
Of course the PPSh is not known for reliability or a big capacity. So half of them probably jammed after the first round and the rest ran out of ammo after a second of fire.
