We are celebrating the 5th Anniversary of the first episode (and dawn of the fandom) of MLP, which which premiered on the brand-new HUB Network on October 10th of 2010.
Half a decade we've been on this ride together.
Some children who are now the target audience for the show were not even BORN yet when the first episode aired.
A lot has happened in that time, for all of us.
Friendships have been made
Careers have been launched
Relationships, Marriages, and even Children have been spawned,
all rooted in a common love for a cartoon about love and friendship.
We've had good times and bad times.
We've had successes and failures.
We've had charity and we've had criminals.
We've made new friends and lost others.
We've had art and music, meetups and conventions, laughs and tears.
And we've definitely had comedy and drama.
Today, we join together, as one fandom, to celebrate 5 years of this community we've built around a cartoon about pastel horses.
And so, I again take great pleasure in welcoming you to the My Little Pony 5th Anniversary Celebration!
At 12:01 A.M. EST, we will be launching a continuous, back-to-back stream of EVERYTHING
Every episode, movie, HUB Commercial, and animated short from S1E1 to EQG3
The stream will last nearly 48 hours and is being hosted on cytube's /r/mlpanniversary
Throughout the day we will be playing games such as Cards Against Humanity, Board Game Online, and others. We will be holding contests and giveaways for merchandise, and other prizes such as Steam games.
There will be an ongoing thread on /mlp/ celebrating the anniversary, and we invite everyone to join us. This is the one day a year that we put aside our differences and enjoy the show together as a community.

I always think that I overrate S1 until I rewatch it. I fell in love with the show because of S1. Not S2, S3, S4 or S5. The S1 characters are the ones that I love the most. And while the visuals, animation and music get better with the later seasons, the characters are still the best in S1. And that's what matters for me. I play vidya for the gameplay and I watch cartoons for the characters. Pretty superficial stuff is a great bonus of course but just not as important.
And with this opinion I am part of the large majority.

That was all that was great about the episode in my opinion, the episode then descended into Spike acting like a complete retard with him coming up with fucking stupid plans for 20 minutes instead of just telling Twi what was wrong.
It's pretty similar to SAYS in that regard, the episode could've just been solved with like one sentence of dialogue. Granted a lot of episodes could do that, but this one was worse off cause of how fucking bad Spike's plans were. I personally find it to be one of the worst episodes in the series.
And nah, there's no problem with being a nostalgia fag if you acknowledge it honestly. I kinda wish I was one, I only stopped being one cause of all the notalgiafags hailing S1 as perfect and shitting on the other season cause of it.

What you're projecting onto Spike in this instance goes against the characterization, or lack thereof in this case being a season 1 episode, that he is a naive child who doesn't know any better.
Granted, MMDW did have poorer execution in the regard that the characters' mistake was one they probably shouldn't have made, but again where is there airtight definition they shouldn't have made the mistake?
Take SaYS for example: as you defined, the conflict raised should have been good but it was objectively poorly executed considering it took all the characterization of Spike and threw it out the window to make him incompetent instead of just having him get in the way or be a nuisance to AJ.

A stupid plan is a stupid plan no matter what, he may have done it, and he may have done it because he was a naive child, but that doesn't make it any less stupid. And that's what made the episode bad. Not that he didn't know any better, but cause his plan was fucking retarded and his reaction to him being found out was even worse.
Same thing with MMDW, even if they didn't know shit, it doesn't make their plan any better.

Slice of Life is quite simply the worst thing to happen to MLP ever. Its forced profundity has caused tons of people in the brony fandom to force themselves to like what is quite simply nothing more than an exercise in style.
Larson has no idea what he is doing here. His episode jumps around with little to no sense of unity. The great writers of the world create a series of events that contain clarity of information, something Larson couldn't bet his life on.
What is the purpose of what is going on here? Is there any coherent message? I have heard suggestions that it is Larson's message about fanpandering on the show, but what pandering is that? Does Larson even know?
This is Transformers for the brony crowd. Pure style over substance. Nobody actually likes this episode, they just like to be seen liking it.

The most overrated hack of them all, M.A. Larson is the king of animated masturbation and the “Look, ma, I’m writing” style of storytelling. He represents almost everything that’s wrong with self-indulgent screenwriting. The critics love him because of his ability to tell funny jokes. If only he could move the audience. But then again, why bother telling a story when you can swoop through an overblown meme scene. Or get the brilliant voice actress Tabitha to do a retard impersonation for over two hours opposite a bunch of other meme horses. He won acclaim when he took the depth and creativity out of the brony fandom and remade it into the overblown, shallow snoozer Slice of Life.

Their characterisation and everything about them is truly terrible. A real low point for the series. When I first saw that opening scene I thought it'd just be a nightmare rather than the actual reality. It's a shame because I sort of like the episode too

Yeah, except for how extreme the Yaks act (and a bit too much randomness at a few times) the episode is actually pretty great. The ponies' characters are very well written in my opinion.
