ITT: People contribute music stuffs and we combine everyone's efforts into music. Everyone is welcome to participate. You can also discuss show/fandom music, ask for/give critique of yours or other's music, share tips and tricks, etc.

Previous Thread: https://desustorage.org/mlp/thread/25453627

Album Info:

>What is this?
This is a project that aims to actually create an album of music from /mlp/. It'll be a compilation of sorts, potentially containing everything from originals, remixes, collaborations, etc. The past efforts never came to fruition, so we're trying once again. If you create music, sing, rap, create art, write lyrics, have ideas, or just want to participate somehow, jump right in, and email [email protected] who you are, what you do, contact info (May include preferred email, YouTube, SoundCloud, ect), and anything else you want to say.

>What kind of music is the album going to contain?
Virtually anything is acceptable. This means complete originals, remixes, collaborations, soundscapes, etc.
Simply create a folder for your work within the proper folder within the Dropbox (more info in the Google Doc). For example, music goes in the music folder. Your folder will be used for sharing ideas, posting demos, etc. For your finished product, you may submit a mastered and/or unmastered WAV or AIFF, and simply drop it into your folder, indicating it's the final one.

>What about artwork?
Yes, we need artists as well for the album cover. Artwork will be submitted to the Dropbox in the same way as the music. Decisions on how which piece will be chosen will be arranged soon. Artwork for individual songs is possible for those that want it.

>I HAVE MOAR QUESTIONS

Yeah, sorry I didn't bump before bed last thread.
Saw it on page 8 and thought someone else would do it.
Anyhoo, I had a go at putting the Game of Thrones stuff together:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/li1zj02ki1klsgv/GoT%28Y%29_The%20more%20earnest%20third%20attempt_Full.wav?dl=0
Messed with the volumes of each channel, didn't pan anything and tried to correct the pitch of one note at 1:06 (was too flat but now slightly sharp).
Not sure how loud the bass channel should be, though. I can't judge with my headphones.

So here's a little WIP I thought I'd tell you guys a little about:

Almost all of this was made with default FL studio drum samples and 1 free synth called "T-Force Alpha Plus.

The bass was made with 8 stereo widened saw waves that were multiband compressed at about -7db.

I also layered a sine wave with the high end and low end driven to the max but compressed to match the saw bass. I almost always master the fart (saw) bass and the sub (sine) bass separately.

I used FL Keys for the piano part. I added the reverb after the compression. (I do that for most of my instruments) I find that piano samplers sound better when you use mid prominent compression. Sometimes I even put on high resonance lowpass/highpass (NOT BANDPASS) cutoff filters before I compress to get a really interesting dampening effect. I make sure that I have the filters set to allow the full sound to pass through BEFORE I compress, then go back into the filters and do proper adjustments. This is so the compression can account for the added resonance of the cutoff filters.

If anyone ever wants stems/midis/samples from my music or if you have any questions then please don't hesitate to ask!
>>
>>25529479
Sounds pretty good. The low bass below ~80Hz is getting a little out of control. Either EQing it some with a shelving filter or multiband compression will help. Otherwise, I like.
>>
>>25529658
So you think I should just turn that end down a little basically?
>>
>>25529665
Yeah, however, I was also hearing it getting louder here and there (as if resonating in a room). A multiband comp for just those low frequencies might be all you need. EQing a bit will help too. In any case, this is all just to keep the bass from overpowering everything else Too much.
>>
>>25529866
I'm already using multiband compression but maybe I should compress just a little more while turning down that specific frequency you mentioned.

I personally don't like the sound of EQing synths that change in pitch. Most of the time I only EQ drum samples and things like that.
>>
I can take a crack at playing drums for that death metal song. Just send me shit to play to.
>>
>>25529879
>I personally don't like the sound of EQing synths that change in pitch. Most of the time I only EQ drum samples and things like that.
Do you at least use low/high pass filters as needed? If not, that easily could be the cause of the bass buildup.

Sure. Please.
Admittedly, that's why I uploaded the individual tracks first rather than the whole thing put together. I know I'm an amateur when it comes to the processing/post-processing side of things.
Care to explain why reverb is sorely needed? Teach a man to fish 'n' whatnot.

If anything I feel like we need motivated people to post regular updates, criticism, and to start collaborative projects.
Or a cellist that doesn't die. I know at least three projects that are on hold because of the lack of a cellist. Including untitled_29 which has been around for almost a year now, maybe more.

>posting regular updates, criticism, and to start collaborative projects
Several collab projects have been started and it'd be best to concentrate on them.
Not sure what to do about motivated people.
I'd say updates are as regular as the work done behind them but that's not true or accurate.

>untitled_29
>been around for almost a year now
Heh. The actual midi file is over three years old now...
As for the lack of progress, I'd say that's more my fault: I've still got material from Engie I need to work on for it.
What were the other two projects again?

>Google drive?
I just checked: my mediafire account's got 9.5GB free space still.
>>
>>25537766
>we need motivated people to post regular updates
Impossible, because this motivated people you talk, is the people who are actually working and/or studying

>untitled_29 has been around for almost a year now.
In my opinion, some themes/songs will stay outside of the album because it seems that they will not be finished, a theme that hasn't been finished in a year it's not gonna be finished in the next year.

Posting some content before heading to sleep let's see what I think of it when I wake up. Today we have a rock/metal remix of "The Spectacle". I'll be honest: the lines "Turn it all up; It's a spectacle" bothers me due to lack of rhyming, even if it was in the original.
I do like where it is going overall but it just needs... more, including more polish, but that's all a given with more time.
More instrumentals, breaks (don't know whether that's the right word) and more vocal harmonising (just because I like harmonising).

I'd like to extend it, but there's just not much to work with in the original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNEZNpjiaPY). At only ~1 minute long, I've already over doubled the length. I may lengthen it a bit, though. As for polish, that'll come with mixing.

Ideas for bass:
•Turning the bass guitar up. It sounds pretty low at the moment.
•Adding some cello/double bass can beef it up.
•Try sending the bass to an aux, pitch the aux down an octave, and mixing that
•Try sending the bass to an aux, put a distortion on it, crank the bass, and use a lpf to get rid of excess high end (or use a distortion that's dark in and of itself).
•Add some low mids to the guitars. I'm not sure if that'll work, seeing as the guitars sound fairly thin.

As for the mix as is, it's sounding pretty good. You might also want to try and brighten the guitars just a bit. Adding/upping the reverb a tad is an idea. Compositionally, having a couple big timpani and/or cymbal parts for emphasis can work nicely.

Yeah, composition and arrangement is Harmonica's buisness. I already suggested him adding something. like chellos or double bass a long time ago. 3 different harps are very uncomfortable thing to listen to imo. Still, piece have it's beauty.

Judging from your response main fix i can do is to do that on proper monitors instead of headphones. And i don't have anything but them so i can't even check how it translates to other systems.
Because bass is already distorted (i don't think actualy hearing distortion would suit this song, didn't tried harmonising on that thing though), and if i add some more low end to guitar it'd sound muddy.

Oh God indeed.
I'm so sorry. I thought this would be a quick easy thing.

>Everything is so thin
What does this mean? I don't understand.

>Thoughts please
I think it needs to be louder and less reverb.
It somehow sounds all... wishy-washy. Some parts are better for it but, overall...
That is the extent of my mixing knowledge.
Also louder main harp. I don't know whether that preference is because that's how I always hear myself when playing.

I thought it wasn't. Beyond peaking at a few points, it was all recorded without an amp straight into the audio interface with as much gain as possible without distorting.

Heeeeey man what's with this sad face? I love what you're doing, i wouldn't take your stuff for mixing otherwise. Now i'm feeling like i'm an asshole with poor choice of words. Sorry.

And you're getting me wrond, Harmonica.
Let's start.

Thin means that yor harps and whistles contains a small amount of harmonics. Like, acoustic guitar plays in a whole range of frequencies, from something like 60 to 18k. Your middle harp plays in a very thin range compared to that. There's only high frequencies, and not a whole lot of them too. Just a few sines. Picrelated №1. That means it's a very sharp sound. And there's three of them at the same time. Yeah all together they look like pr №2. Acoustic is number 3. Last one is pink noise. Which is white noise whith high frequencies cutted. It's like some kind of a ruler for mixing engieneers... If harmonic ratios of your mix are close to pink noise than you're good and your mix is pleasant to listen to. That's a very big assumption but well.. I hope it makes sense.

Next thing.
I advise you that a long time ago. I don't even remember if you noticed that comment back then and replied to me.
Bass wasn't distorted.. Well, it is now, because i made it slightly distorted, which is not a bad thing. You did good with that.

I don't understand what do you mean by "whishy-whashy". I do understand "harp louder and less reverb" part though. Please, try to formulate your thoughts on the matter. I really need them.
