Well, let's look at all the plot lines they can wrap up.

>Rarity owns successful boutiques in the largest metropolitan areas
>Pinkie has no real ambitions
>AJ has no real ambitions
>Fluttershy is dating the god of chaos
>Spike was the king of dragons but instantly stepped down
What plot could they possibly come up with? It really will be some random thing, and three of our main characters are already bigger than life thanks to their goals being bigger than life. The other three are still small ponies in a big world, but they get strung along and rely on their more powerful friends so there's not a lot of natural tension left in the show.

The appeal of the movie is going to be the higher budget for animation, higher weight put on making a good script, and a wide range of new environments considering this is about journeying outside Equestria.
That being said, there's two major downsides to this movie.
For one, this movie is permanently fragmenting the show staff and potentially screwing with canon of the show (not allowing characters to progress or the movie could simply ignore current canon). This alone is detrimental to the show as a whole.
The other thing to consider is the idea that whenever a tv show is adapted as a movie, a lot of it is spent familiarizing the audience with the characters, assuming they haven't seen the show before. This will lead to not only annoying time waste, but it will leave us with flanderized characters for the whole movie in order to bash the audience over with their personalities.
As for if the movie will succeed beyond that, Meghan McCarthy is a very hit and miss writer. I found her two-parters to be hit and miss and she succeeded more with slice of life stuff. This might play to the movies' advantage considering it's going to be just a bunch of scenes going through new areas to make up the journey.
Whatever way it goes, it seems like a lot of wasted time and money on something that's going to be a failure in the theaters. Look back at the list of animated movies in theaters over the past few years. Almost none of them are 2D. The general audience aren't going to be receptive or willing to pay to see a 2D animated movie.

Plus, its not a meme anymore, but don't underestimate the power of bronies to go see this. Adult fans are still a pretty big thing for the show, as the merch aimed at them can attest.
From what we know from that Russian presentation, it'll be a road movie of the Mane 6 recruiting allies against a new threat, which could still be Cosmos (Luna & Celestia's brother from the old McCarthy script) / finding some kind of elemental stones.

the six have all accomplished their dreams but don't seem to really want to "do" their dreams except as hobbies on the side (Rarity keeps leaving other people to run her stores for example). So them finishing their mundane goals in life and then becoming alicorns would be a decent end IMO.

I understand being skeptical about the movie, but the degree to which I've seen here on /mlp/ has been ridiculous. We don't know much about the actual premise of the movie.
Though we do know that Meghan McCarthy and Jayson Thiessen are working on the movie people who have been with this show since Season 1.
While fearing the movie might bad is typical of any fan for a series getting a movie I would say there's more working for this movie than against it.
Yes Meghan McCarthy has struggled with adventure based stories with ponies(with the exception of Dragonshy). But she has progressively gotten better at writing them as time goes on. At least in my opinion. McCarthy at her worst really isn't as bad as people make her out to be. Take a look at all the episodes that she has written personally.
Also Daniel Ingram is working on Music and he usually brings it.
The will make money make no mistake. To even suggest it will perform like the Jem and Holograms movie is ridiculous especially after reading about it here.
